Title: where to find riser bars.
Post by: red_phil on July 19, 2004, 06:11:50 AM
Hi, I've just got a '94 GS500E.

Coming from a Yamaha SR 125, even my 33bHP restricted GS500 feels like a rocket.
Only problem I've found so far is with the riding position.
I have a uk bike that came with clip-on handle bars.
They feel great but only for the first hour or so of riding.
I have recently recovered from RSI in my wrists due to computer work and I was hopeing to reduce stress on my wrists by getting a more upright riding position.

Anyone got any ideas on what I should be looking for.
Part numbers and company names would be useful here.
I'm going on a biking holiday round the highlands of Scotland in 2 weeks and was hoping to have fitted new bars by then.

Welcome to GStwin!

I've looked at more comfortable bars, but being in the U.S., I have the tube type handlebars. I'm not sure how you would get more comfortable clip-ons but I think if you found a set of universal clip-on bars, that may be a start (I'm thinking Helibars). Or, go to a conversion to tube type bars with either obtaining the top triple-clamp and bar mount from the 'For Sale' forum or looking into a Stortz conversion kit (maybe more expensive).

Welcome from MacLaren

Thanks,
I'm thinking of converting to tube type bars.
(funny considering all those round here looking to convert to clip-ons.)

looks like the 2 bolt hols in the current yolk plate will take riser clamps,
I can then fit riser bars.

I've found a site that does nice alloy annodised black bars (810mm wide, 92mm rise) but i wasn't sure what diameter I'd need for the current controls to fit properly.

Phil,
You can get all the bars, risers and bits from.

www.mandp.co.uk              or

www.busters-online.co.uk (this used to be listed as buster-accessories.co.uk until very recently.)

they are both in South Wales and pretty helpful on the dog an bone, I have dealt with both and they are OK.

Anyone know off the top of their head what diameter the two holes in the
yolk plate are?
I'm trying to find raisers in a breakers yard but I'll need to know what size of bolt the fitting needs to be.

I've never done it but I have seen some other posts talking about drilling them out, should be fairly simple even if you cant get stock size, someone will be along shortly with the size betcha!
