Title: k&n drop in - restrictor?
Post by: taki on July 19, 2004, 07:13:32 AM
I recently bought a k&n drop in replacement, and it came with the foam gasket and longer bolts (since the flange of the filter is thicker than the OE)...bike is a stock 2000 gs500e...

is this filter supposed to come with a restrictor? I have emailed k&n, and they have been unresponsive...

it seems to run ok, but im a newbie about bikes...is there anything that i could check to see if its running ok?

thanks in advance...

The restrictor is that mouth its got... like a flange... that's the restrictor... its built in... To restrict it further... put a rolled up sock inside it... or a open sock with the elastic of the socks over the mouth so air will ahve to ge through the sock and then through the filter before... makeing it really close to the paper's filtering, and killing the whole effect of the K&N... but hey I had to do it to my eli 1000 and it works...
Cool.

Before you use a sock, check the intake side of the filter.  Is there a thick rubber ring, that can be removed?  If so that's the restricter.  K&N says to leave that on, unless you rejet your carbs.  There was a thread on here earlier about that little thing.  It said that unless you have an exhaust and have rejetted the K&N doesn't make any difference with or without the restrictor.

If it's the SU-5589 it should have come with a pre-mounted restrictor ring.  See my K&N Stock Replacement Air Filter page.
