Title: How's this for a 1st ride?? 200+ Miles and a puzzler!
Post by: rizp on July 20, 2004, 09:19:15 PM
Hey everyone,
I'm glad to be posting somewhere other than in the "wanted/fs/hot deals" section looking for a bike.

I ended up getting my 96 GS through the GStwin message board (paulm's bike), all the way over in Michigan, and had to ride it back home through Canada to Buffalo, NY. Paul was fantastic to do business with, btw. No pressure, and super helpful. when I ran into one problem, he forwarded a possible solution to me from GStwin before I even had a chance to look around myself. Great guy.

so yeah...MSF course, check. ~20mph max in a parking lot. 20 miles over 2 days in June.

a month later, I'm getting "reacquainted" in stop-and-go over the blue water bridge, followed by ~75mph for the next 220 miles! (not incl one stop for gas and 20 minutes of light rain at ~65mph)

at any rate, I thought I'd post to the board with the problem just in case anyone has any other possibilities for me to look into.

The bike has around 5800 miles:

I was riding across Canada, keeping it relatively steady between 70 and 80 most of the time. I rode for 74 miles and stopped for gas. I filled up with 87 and hung out for a few minutes to rest my aching backside.

hopped back on and rode for around 90 more miles when, about 5 minutes after merging onto the QEW Expressway, while crossing a huge bridge at speed (again, around 70-80) the power started cutting out. Within moments, only my momentum was keeping the revs up, so I shifted to neutral and coasted to the shoulder. (the moment I squeezed the clutch in, the engine cut right out) I checked the tank, which looked ~1/2 full. I tried starting from the shoulder to no avail. a nice fella on an R1 stopped and waited to see if I could get it going. I coasted down the bridge to where he was waiting and essentially told him what I just typed to you. We spoke for a few minutes, then I tried to start it again it started fine.

I rode it for about 15 or so miles, to a gas station where I stopped and checked to see if anything was leaking or anything. There was nothing that a non-mechanic like me could pick up on.

I rode it out again and within 10 minutes, it started cutting out. :o  I coasted to an exit and let it sit for a while. then, sure enough, it ran fine.

it happened once more before I made it the rest of the way back to buffalo. I've put ~50 miles on it since then over the last few days, all local, with no sign of the problem. :dunno:

A fanstastic bike, but I'm curious about the stalling. I mentioned it to paulm, and he (understandably) has never had out for such a long expressway run and has never had it happen to him. He did forward me a thread from GStwin that looked similar to my predicament which claimed "faulty fuel petcock". Is that what this sounds like to you guys?

Thanks in advance for the help! This site is (for many reasons) why I decided to get a GS!!

Regards
Riz

Could be the fuel.  I've had issues with dirty fuel, so I installed a fuel filter.  I learned the hard way, though, $900 worth of work later... :x   I also try to alway burn premium, it cost an extra 50 cents per fill up  .  Try running some carb cleaner.  When I had stalling problems this seemed to help temporarily.  Oh, and there are a lot of people on this site that know a crap ton more than me, so... :dunno:

Hmmmm.  Not sure I want to know that much more than oppy00.... :?

Interesting story:  A couple years ago my brother and I went on a 9-day ride with my two GS500s.  (See the not-yet-complete account at Randy and Kerry's 2002 Trip to British Columbia (http://www.bbburma.net/Trips/Canada_2002/index.html).)  I rode the '99 and he rode the '96.

Throughout the trip he would have the weirdest fuel supply problems.  This was before I had ever heard of GStwin.com, so we didn't know what was going on.  But it was basically the same story; sit on the side of the road for a bit, and then it would start up and run fine ... until next time.  The funny thing is that my '99 has NEVER had this problem as far as I can remember.  (???)

Since then I have read UMPTEEN accounts of "fuel starvation" (which you can use as a good phrase to search on).  Oh!  I just remembered that I posted some suggestions about this TODAY (Tuesday).  See the first 2 posts in the Rode from Chicago to San Diego last Fall and... (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10784) thread.
