Title: Parking in gear vs. 'locked'

Hi folks,

Question:  What does turning the key all the way to the left (towards the parking light) actually do?  Does it engage a brake?  When parking, do people use this or do they leave the bike in gear (or both)?

Does it act as a physical deterrent to some punk interested in walking off with your bike?

This just locks the handlebars, bike can still roll if in neutral. It's a good idea to keep in gear when parked. This can be a small deterrent, but it doesn't take much to pick the bike up and toss it to the back of a truck.

Practice the ultimate deturrent:  park next to a more expensive bike.  :thumb:

Turning the key all the way to park turns on your brakelamp and leaves it on even if you withdraw the key, so you may come back to a bike with a dead battery.

it also doesn't take much for a theif to reach down and shift the bike back into neutral  ;)

still a good idea to leave it in gear though just to hedge your bets against it spontaneously rolling away, expecially if your are on a hill.

And definitely lock the handlebars.  I know I don't want anybody relocating my bike for me while I'm away  :nono:

that reminds me of the time a few of us decided to hide a dude's wrangler from him... he locked the wheel too, so every 10 feet, or so, we'd have to pick up the back and turn the car to face the original direction.... shows you what determination can accomplish  :thumb:

Also so that you can find it if your bike broke down at a deserted and very dark area.  :lol:
