Title: Question about howling sound at 5K
Post by: BRB96Z34 on July 22, 2004, 08:05:16 PM
Ok this is gonna sound kinda stupid but I get the howling sound at 5K rpm's only when I fill the tank.  As soon as it gets down the howl goes away.  Filled up last night and just before - no howl.  As soon as I filled it - howl at 5K.  What gives?  Am I nuts or what?

You mean a howl like a coyote? Thats different. Congratulations on a new problem. I have no idea how to solve that mystery.

Thats the price I pay for spending too much time on coolness, and not enough time troubleshooting.

Yeah more like a real loud hum than a howl - i have the same thing going on.
You could get a tank bra, it cured mine lickety split. I guess it's vibration and engine noise traveling better through a liquid as opposed to air when the tank's not full. With my legs tight on the tank it was worse so i guess maybe even a little bit of that noise came through your body as well. I notice also when i ride with certain people with cobra pipes it produces an unpleasant frequency in my helmet if i'm not in front of their exhaust.

My bike used to "buzz" at higher RPM's.  When I realized it sounded like a vibrating noise, I started touching things as I rode and eventually found that when I held part of the fairing on the left side, the buzz went away.  To solve the problem I just tightened the all of the bolts on the fairing, but if it happens again, I'll put some rubber or something between the two pieces that are rubbing.

Yeah, I guess it's more like a loud hum but it's still annoying.  I'll accept the theory that the sound is travelling throught the liquid easier thus "amplifying" the sound.  Any more crazy ideas?

Have you already checked for something like this?

This caused a vibrational noise for me at around 5,000 RPM.

Often it's related to the gas tank mounts or mounting. Since experimenting with air filter and jetting I've pulled and remounted my tank too many times. :x Since then my bike's noise has nearly disappeared.

Yeah, checked the usual suspects already.  Checked the exhaust brackets and had the tank off a few times - not the problem.
