Title: engine knocking
Post by: scootr9718 on July 22, 2004, 11:03:04 PM
ok, so my engine knocks a bit at idle, not consistently, but in and out. I just changed the oil, thinking that might help. But, it's still there...any thoughts? :dunno:

Do a search for camshaft endplay, using the Search for all terms option.  Read through the message threads that are returned.  Currently there are only two.

. . . . . . . . . .

Does any of that seem to describe / explain the noise you're hearing?

The description for camshaft endplay hits it right on the head...more when cold, and comes and goes when hot. It also seemed to be affected if the bike is leaning a bit...when I'm stopped, moving the bike around seems to change it, which would seem to be consistent with the camshaft moving. Are there any long term concerns here? Or damage issues I should worry about?

None that I know of.

BIZZARE! I have the same issue knock when cold, doesn't seem to really go with the RPM speed of the engine but when warm i rarely rarely hear it... it seemed to go away more when i used premium vs. regular gas. I thought it was engine knock from early detonation. Could it be a camshaft moving around??? Is this sort of noise/problem typical of the GS?
