Title: almost killed myself today
Post by: GRU on July 25, 2004, 11:04:41 PM
let me just say that this was a stupid thing i did

why?....well, i wanted to go by the camera as fast as i could
what went wrong?.....the going by the camera part wasn't hard, it's the stoping that almost killed me...
the space for me to stop in time for the stop sign was minimal and i didn't think i was gonna go so fast by the camera....

here is the video
http://www.eachosting.com/~gru/GRU/Video/almost_crashed.wmv
(please, right click and save as)
after i passed the camera at about 160 (maybe more ) i then relized that i need to stop before the stop sign and that was imposible.....so i braked as good as i could and tried not to panic.....i locked the rear brake but not all the way, it kept on braking good but i was running out of road so i went on the grass (good thing there were no trucks or cars on the street i passed) and went between the sign on the left and the pols on the right.....jumped the curb and landed on the parking lot.....stoped about 6 meters from the building and thanked god

i got lucky because i kept it cool.....i didn't lock the brakes and droped the bike.....there were no cars crossing the road and i just made it to a stop before the building

so there is my story, can i get my custom title now

Dances With Buildings?   :dunno:
Skid-o-Matic?

Sheesh, and I thought _I_ had good reason to freak out when that cow moved into my lane!     (Oh yeah - I already HAVE a custom title.  Sorry.)

Seriously, that's scary stuff.  I'm glad you made it!

Not that you'll be trying anything like that again soon, but it would be good to practice your emergency stops just in case.  But I'm sure I didn't need to tell you that....

(I need to add that to MY to-do list, too.  I'm definitely getting rusty in the emergency stopping area.)

OK I have one incredible incident on the way to work this morning... There is this 1 lane road, which splits into 2 lanes and then a right and left turn lane come up ~ 1/4 mile before the intersection... if you fall back and accelerate at the right point you can pass anyone in front of you on the left, and cut back into the right turn lane, but there is a driveway out of auto zone that is on the left that comes across the divider to let the people make a left out of auto zone... I should go back and see if that one out of autozone says right only ... anyway on my eli 1000 its easy... so I do it to this beat up clunker today, and horror of horrors there is a freaking  :guns:  auto zone semi turning left out of  :guns:  auto zone, taking up the 4 lanes on my side  :o ... and worse, its painted black  :? , and has trucks and cars on its side  :? ... I didn't even think it was a semi... I just thought that is the regular road... and the clunker next to me braked so hard I heard his tires squeal... and realized what that object in front of me was  :? ... but anyway... I got into the right lane and made it to the tun lane with little help from the shoulder... but no damn mean feat with me on Queen Latifah ...
Cool.
Srinath.

I don't get it, what does that mean?  Did you start to skid but recovered?  My MSF instructor would've yelled at you for risking a high-side.  Glad to see there weren't any mangled remains (of you or your bike) in the vid.  :)

Cripes, Srinath -- glad to hear you're not smooshed into the side of a semi.  What's going on?  Friday the 13th isn't for another three weeks.

ooooooo...very lucky indeed.  glad to hear you're okay and didn't panic or anything.  tell the truth, i really love that line you show on the vid.  it starts well before the stop sign, and continues all the way down the grass...you can totally tell what happened there.  knowing you're okay, that line had me on the floor. :thumb:

custom title?  how about "will brake for life".

Ok guys, I have a little story to tell as well.

I'm making my morning trek to work on a three lane highway. I like to pretty much try to keep my speed up around 80mph (really 72mph corrected) in 5th gear with my rpms around 9-10K. Anyways, traffic is starting to get congested slightly, but nothing to worry about. While riding in the middle lane this car suddenly swerves over into my lane (within 10 feet of me) from the right without warning! :o  No signal was given :x  and the dangerous move was uncalled for :nono: . I mean, there was a pretty good cushion between this car and the one in front of it to begin with :dunno: .

Anyways, I knew my left exit was open b/c I'm always checking my surroundings for emergency escape routes. So, I immediately signal and change lanes as we are rounding a bend. No problems, right? Wrong. What I failed to realize was that bump in the middle of my lane change. The result was a quick tank slapper that made my throat drop into my chest. Not fun. Not fun at all.

So, what did we learn from these three stories, kids?
1) know your limitations
2) always look ahead for the unknown
3) pay attention to road conditions

aww... the Canadian accent is cute, eh?

I've seen those Autozone trucks and never really thought about how confusing that could look.  Maybe they should reconsider the car paintjob...
