I was wondering if once you install the pingel petcock if you have to reach under the tank and shut off the valve when you park your bike? if you don't, does the gas overflow like if you left it on prime?

Even if you leave it on PRI, gas shouldn't spill. if it does, it means your floats are stuck open. Most people who've done the Pingel mod have also invested in a quick disconnect fitting, so you can just disconnect the fuel tank when you park.
i do plan on getting the quick disconnect piece as well. so that's good to know that i shouldn't have to turn off the flow when i park. but that raises another question. i left my bike on pri a few months ago and woke up to a puddle of gas on the ground. could that mean that my floats are already stuck open and i'm definately going to have to modify that before i install the pingel? the answer seems like an obvious YES, but i don't want to assume when it comes to tearing the carbs apart again. i suppose a float height check would be in order soon....

It could be one ... or the other ... or both. But my money is on just one of the float valve needles not seating properly. They (and the brass seats) probably just need a good cleaning.

Never had a problem with flooding the carbs from leaving the valve open. I have been meaning to order a pingel valve. With only the tank valve, I never turn off the valve but do have a disconnect that I only use when the tank is removed. Gas can drain from the carbs when the tank is disconnected unless you get a double shut-off disconnect. Mine only shuts of gas flow from the tank.
OH yeah! Excellent description of how stuff works in there. I think I actually understand now, and i definately know what to look for when looking at the silver bullett piece to see if the tip is worn.
I'm not looking forward to taking the tank and carbs off again but I think that's due to the previous trama when dealing with the old fuel lines and petcocks. Once I get the Pingel installed, things should be much easier to take on and off.
