Title: Ignition advancers?
Post by: BilldaCat on July 27, 2004, 07:13:25 AM
After reading the ignition advance mod posted here, I decided to try to find the part.. found it at:

http://www.mawonline.com/vance&hi.htm#Ignition%20advancers

2 different models are listed though for the Suzuki..

(27771)     $39.95 Vance & Hines Ignition Advancer SUZ #16175
(03563)     $39.95 Vance & Hines Ignition Advancer SUZ #22136

which one would I want?  I have a 2004 GS500F.  Anything else I need to know?

Thanks!

OK Get the one that is not back ordered... Oh yea They both probably are. And Bob Broussard used to make them out of the stock advancer... Try him. Better bet than either of those 2.
Cool.

Just follow the steps and do the DYI timing advance from the modifications page,  no parts required.  I just did my '04 F model on Sunday.  Took about 15 minutes start to finish.  All that's required is repositioning the two mounting holes.  It was really a piece of cake.  Runs like a champ.

Just trying to save you $40 + S/H and backorder time

Then on the other hand.......You have different fingers.

i'm also interested in this...i'm not too mechanically inclined so i'm a little hesitant to start filing or dremelling? the rotor  :dunno:

It's quite simple actually.  All you do is elongate or redrill the 2 holes 3 mm off of their original point, just make sure it's turning the rotor counter-clockwise is all.  You can't screw anything up really.  If it doesn't work right for you, just put the rotor back to it's original position. No harm no foul.

If you are still concerned about it and you can live w/o the bike for a week, send the rotor to me and I'll do it for you if you'd like.

Or get with Bob Broussard... and modify your advancer to be a better advancer... and believe me its better than the dremeling the rotor plate... cos it reduces the dwell, making the advance peak occour sooner...
Cool.

Even better,  I'd go that route...

Search for Bob Broussard, this board is the best way to contact him,and they are free exchanged with yours, but a contribution to his race bike would be welcome... I think.
Cool.

I don't know if he's still doing it for people.  Last I heard he shipped a few out, but wasn't getting any back in return.

Best of luck though, I hope you can get one.

Do NOT buy either of these advancers.  They are NOT the right part.

V&H has not made an advancer for the GS500 for a couple years now, so the only way you would find one is to luck into it.  Let's say that someone at MAW discovered a box of them in the back room or something.  How could you tell for sure whether it was the right part?

Hint #1: The number at the beginning of each MAW listing is the MAW part number, while the number at the end of the listing is the manufacturer's part number.

Hint #2: Look at the packaging for the V&H advnacer on the Installation of the Vance & Hines Ignition Advancer page.  It saysV21926[/list:u]I repeat - do NOT buy either of these advancers.

In the upper-right corner of every GStwin page (including THIS one) there is a "Go To:" dropdown box.  Click on the "V" (down arrow) and select "Modification & How To" from the list.

I believe the necessary tools are described on the Ignition Advancer page.

KERRY, you are my hero!!!!

That post uses the V&H part though.  Being very inexperienced, I was hoping to see something with this aforementioned drilling method......Thanks again

You want the next link down (on the "GS500 Modifications Page").  It's calledDo It Yourself Timing Advance (http://www.gstwin.com/diy_timing_advance.htm)[/list:u]And ^that^ is a direct link.

Should be.  As far as I know the engine has not changed at all.  (The oil cooler doesn't count.   )
