Title: Anyone ever get stuck in neutral?
Post by: charleym3 on July 30, 2004, 07:42:05 AM
Happened this AM.  Rolling up to a stop light, I downshift to 1st, I thought, but the green light is on.  Let the clutch out and ... Nothing.  I hit the shifter again.  Green light still on, so I do it again, and again.  Finally I upshift to 2nd then down, with some force, to 1st and I'm off.  Darn good thing there wasn't anyone behind me.
It was a little un-settling to be stuck with no power.

Stop the bike, put the clutch in, roll it forward a little bit with one leg while clicking to first with your shift leg.

So it isn't just my bike or my imagination.  Okay.

Or let the clutch out slightly while shifting. Helps when mine doesn't want to go from 1 to 2.

Blip the throttle with the clutch in.  Helps things sync up again and should drop right into gear.

Suzuki seems to provide that "design feature" on most of their bikes.

I have had this happen for the last couple of times of riding..i'm nearing the 600mile mark.

I checked my oil and the level is fine.  The bike would get stuck on neutral even though the light isn't on.  I'd have to either clutch down or up to get power back....what's going on with these bikes??

Kawasakis are much worse. They even have a name for it: "Positive neutral finder".

Its just the nature of sequential gear boxes. The gears have to be turning for them to mesh properly.

how long did you have the clutch pulled in for? it happens when you have the clutch pulled in for a longer time....solution, just let out the clutch (since you're in neutral) and pull it back in and shift to 1st

I had not quite come to a complete stop.  I've seen the neutral light flash before as I was going down to first.  Just never got hung between before. I discovered the loss of power as I reved and let the clutch out and nothing happened.  Several times.
Ya'll can probably tell that I don't yet have complete command of my bike.  Maybe by the time I've run the third tank of gas through it.

I noticed that first is a bear to find on the Suzuki compared to the Beemer, though.  I never had to do the rolling trick with the Beemer, and have to do it almost once an outing on the Suzuki.

The rest of the gearbox (2->6) is a lot tighter and more certain on the Suzuki, though.

I second that :thumb:
Letting out the clutch lever and pulling it back in works for me everytime Neutral gets stuck. Not sure why :dunno:

does trying to force it in result in a nasty grinding noise for you?
