I heard that the SM Type 2 bars for the SV650/S were better than stock. Whats the difference. How much do they cost. And do you need to fab anything or are they direct replacement? Thanks for any and all info!!!
Yeah dude, they rule. I hated the riding position on my bike and they made it much more comfortable, especially with my rearsets. They are essentially flat, and really lower the bar height. No mods are required, although I would reccomend some nice aftermarket grips. I think that they are $130, and in my opinion worth it all. A member of this board makes some bars that are similar to the SMs, but their history is a little too dubious for my tastes. Anyway, I hope this helps.
ive got the type one bars and like em alot.....too expensive for me but eh...bought them anyway....really nice
try it out though on your stock bars....sort of....you can unbolt them and flip them over so and put them on up side down....thats about how the sm bars will be, just not that far forward.

Yea Dubious is me... OK I have a prototype of a Type 2... made for a GS... 90-00 only, and fits it like a glove. It was the first lot I made and I stopped making more of these after a few... due to the fact it had more welds.. I went to 2 welds and was able to make better ones I think ... but if you want to try I'll send you the thing for shipping $$$. Try it, and let me know. They wont break, but they dont have a rod welded inside... so might not be as strong, and here is the dubious part... If you like them, send it back, I'll jig them and figure out how to fit a rod inside... and make them and send it to you.
I can post a pic as well if you like.
Cool.

Are they like coated or something?? Or do they look like a pipe?? Do they look like Type 2's? And you said just pay shipping? Sorry for all the ?s but my Dad told me that if I wanted them that I would have to save up and buy em myself, and I don't think I could save up $130. I thought you already made them and sold them.
have a look-see ->here<- (http://pantablo500.tripod.com/pablosgs500page/id29.html) for my install of Suburban-machinery.com sv650 type-2 bars on my gs. Worth every penny of the $120 cost for the Type-2's (Type 1's are $150).
They are a direct bolt on and easy to install. I did mine on my lunch hour at work. They mimick the riding position afforded by clip-on handlebars. They put your weight more forward, over the handlebars giving you better feedback. The bike feels like it turns on a dime with these bars. Some, including myself would recommend rearsets also but I never did it and I was fine. I just think they would be more comfortable. They are not uncomfortable though, on the contrary.
They are stainless steel. Exceptionally high quality and company has great customer service. They f.ing rock. :thumb:
They look great, feel great and are super responsive on the bike. Get some new grips and your in buisness. That small double headlight mod from England would fit it perfect. Hmm maybe I'll do that next.
not really much left to say about them that hasn't been said, but add one more :thumb: for the SM type 2 bars from me. i've had them for about a year, and have loved them.

They are powder coated black... Mine not the SM's. The biggest difference is mine are steel, the SM's are stainless steel. The other differences... and I am sure aplitz will be along to point out some more... like you havent seen the recall notices and the other messages flying around a few weeks ago ... My usual model, whether it be 90-00 or 01+ ... the bar only has 2 welds, all SM's have 4. The weld area in mine also have a bent 1/2 inch rod inserted, and plug welded to one side and welded to the other side... so its welded in... The bars I said were free, are in fact none of the above... these are 4 welds, and they have no rod inside. But they are similar to the SM Type 2's, but made to fit a GS not a SV... so it fits wiht no need to djust or fiddle wiht anyhting, and nothing hits anyhting else. Free, cos I dont have a 90-00 bike to fit it to, but I did try it on a few bikes including Gino's 96, and I would like feed back... The bars are quite strong, however I would prefer to jig and make them with a rod insert... So If you like them and want more... I'll jig up and make them, and those you'd have to buy. So send me $$$ for shipping ($9-10), and an address, and I'll Upms the prototype to you.
Cool.

what rearset are you guys talking aboot? and where can i get some?
what are rearsets?
I have the SM2's and love them. If your ever around Tuscaloosa, give me a shout and you can see mine first hand. :thumb:
Quote from: shiplemwwhat are rearsets?
Rear sets are the plates that hold the riders footpegs.
So has anyone tried these bars on the new 'F model? Or for that matter has anyone make their own bars for the '04?
fett
I do... Rather I will, the bars have been test fitted and I am getting them back, I will jig them and make them for a 04... 01-04 wll be the same. I am not talking about SM's ... The ones I make.
Cool.
Srinath.
OK having got no response from 96gs ... and ratboy wants them... so ... sold (OK shipping ) to ratboy... and in fact, I am going to jig these... so I wont even need them back... Use it and post comments on it, and that's it. i will make them, and since its just cut and welded, I will probably be able to make these cheaper... and I might also give up on the rod insert thing... cos the thing has to have 4 rods inserted and plug welded... I think its far too complex. I'll probably use thicker wall tubing and weld them.
Cool.
Srinath.
Hey sorry for no response. I can't do it till I get myself a job which, sadly, will be a little while. I would really like these but I can't get them. Sorry. :(
Oh ... OK How about Ratboy send it to you when he's done with these ... and gets the production version... instead of the prototype... and believe me when I say the production one will be better... at the very least... it wont be rusted to hell and powder coated over  But I believe I am going to make some improvements including bevelling the welds, drilling the ends for weights, closed end fitting instead of the 2 open end ones this has and of course not let a years worth of rust get on it either...
Cool.
