Can it be done?
If how? If not, my GS goes to the locksmith tomorrow, and I'll have to stop by the drug store for some vaseline on my way there.

I have tried with no success. They can be removed with a well placed screwdriver and you could save the locksmith charge as well. :mrgreen:
you probably can't open it, why don't you just take it off? just take out the four hex bolts that are holding it on.

It is not that simple. The 4 screws that hold it down will free the cap but the cap cannot be removed completely without releasing the lock. The lock will not come free of the tank without unlocking it or forcing it off.
yep you either have to call a locksmithy, use the key code to have a new key cut, or hammer a screwdriver into the lock, and then twist it.
If you do the brute force approach, once you've got it off, the tumblers inside the lock will be ruined. Take the lock apart (two screws on the inside) and remove them, otherwise they can jam the lock either locked or unlocked, which rather sucks when you are in a hurry.
hey James........to remove the core is a key required? I cannot find what is left of the broken key so I cannot remove the core. I may find it as I continue to clean up my shop. The cap is off of the tank. I plan on doing the screwdriver mod but would rather remove the core and do it cleanly to make sure it does not jam.
Nope, just two philips screws on the inside of the cap. Just be careful taking it apart, there are lots of little springs inside both for the cap seal and the key flap.
hmmm........I have removed the 2 screws but did not apply too much force to the core....maybe I need a bigger hammer.
You could try your hand ay picking it yourself....
Have a dremel with the little whizz wheel and some old windshield wiper inserts??? (easy to make the pics..)

Yes, it can be done. I removed and swaped my old one with a new lock which had no key. I dissasembled it to get it off, then switched the inards of mine with the ring of the new one in order to keep using my same key for the ignition and gas cap. There are two little springs, and two tiny ball bearings. Be carfull. . . if not put back in properly, it won't work very well.
Sometimes I wish I weren't the coolness rep. for this board. . . it's alot of work.

Screwdriver mod has been completed. Took me a little while (a half bottle of wine will do that) to realize all that was required to remove the core was to move a retaining clip under the o-ring on the bottom. Plenty of little springs and stuff all over the place now. Good thing I do not need them any more. :mrgreen:
