Title: Tach Stopped Working - Any Ideas...?
Post by: PHxIgnition on August 02, 2004, 08:17:09 PM
I went out with some friends and everything was fine on the ride there. It started to thunder so I decided to head home. As I left the parking lot i noticed my tach was not working, just out of the blue like that... it had been working fine not 30 minutes earlier.

Im planning to open the gauge pod tommorow and check for loose wires but any advice or anyone with experiance with this problem would be greatly appreciated!

i hope its not a major problem, i don't wanna lose faith in my new little suzuki:(

thanks!

my first guess would be that the cable vibrated loose out of the back of it, if not, try pulling it apart, the insides are pretty simple

Check the cable connections at the cylinder head and the back of the tach. Probably just came loose.

I had the same problem... check the cable connections.  if that doesn't provide an ovious problem, it's much more likely that your tach cable snapped than that your tach itself broke.

Check that first. =]  pull on the cable after you unscrew it from the tach or the engine, see if half of it just comes out.

I took a look at the bike this morning, seems the cable that runs from the tach to the engine was disconnected at the engine... screwed it back in and its working fine!

One more question tho.. Is the cable supposed to be greasy? didnt think id get that dirty putting the cable back in...

Yeh, after a few years the cable can get pretty greasy. You can clean it with some brake cleaner and then lube it back up with a dry lube like graphite and that will make it last longer, plus it will be smoother and quiet. Lovin' the little GS and the forum.

use loctite on it. Mine would come loose about every few months it seemed.
