Title: Tightening the rotor bolt...
Post by: The Buddha on August 03, 2004, 09:38:21 AM
OK I get the bike back in 1 piece and fit it back and start it... and it runs for ~ 3 mins... and dies... and next thing I know... the starter spins, but the motor does not.... I think that bolt on the magnet rorot came off... and so I have to ask... how does that damn thing stay in place and not unscrew out...
Cool.

Eh?

The motor turns counter clockwise.
The flywheel bolt has standard clockwise threads.
Even if you didn't torque the fark out of it (like you are supposed to do) it should be "self-tightening".

Are the threads in either it or the crank damaged?
Did you forget the woodruff key?

This one has no woodruff key... and it is self loosening... the starter spins the motor as seen from left side counterclockwise... and that is the direction the starte gear locks into the starter clutch and that can make it go loose...
Cool.

Title: bolt was loose...
Post by: The Buddha on August 03, 2004, 07:28:24 PM
Opened it today... the bolt was loose... luckily it wasn't out fully, and letting the rotor flail about inside... it was just a couple threads loose, that has caused the big starter crank gear to slide into the gap between the starter idler gears ... So I got it all positioned back right and cranked the rotor bolt down tight... and here is the million dollar trick... between the starter gear on the crank and the idler gear I stuck a penny... and crank away at the center bolt... the crank gear cant turn clockwise and the rotor cant turn cos in that direction the starter clutch is engaged, and the crank cat turn wihtout these turning wiht it once the taper is in the rotor... so its all cranked tight... BTW wont work for un screwing cos the starter clutch is dis engaged...
Cool.
