Title: grabby throttle
Post by: Jeff P on August 06, 2004, 05:11:05 AM
Got a question about my throttle.  When I'm rolling it on from zippy, like when starting from a stop or after a shift, I'm getting an abrupt response.  It feels like there's ~ 30 degrees or so of twist in the grip before the gas gets on, and when it does it's jerky.

If my car was acting up like this I'd get a can of TB cleaner and clean it out.  Is that something to look into on the GS? Or perhaps does it just have something to do with my throttle cable?  Thanks!

Could be just hesitant reaction to your throttle input. I had to get adjusted to that after I had tuned my carbs much leaner.

What happens: Reaction to your throttle input is not immediate (that's what a lean condition causes) your reaction is to open the throttle further, so when the carb finally reacts, the throttle is too wide open, causing a jerky reaction.

Look at your float height and check for possibly clogged jets.

It could be just a loose or sticking cable, but loose should not react jerky once it picks up, and stickky you would probably feel.

Adjust the slack - two adjustment points, one right by the grip, one down by the carbs - you should only need to adjust the one by the grip.  Too much free-plan gives the symptom you report - too little makes the revs rise when you turn the bars.
