Title: OK Injury question
Post by: GVH on August 06, 2004, 09:25:55 PM
I broke the collar bone July 3. I'm much better now but still far fom riding a bike. Does anyone have any experience in this area ??

It's driving me nuts. I want to ride but just can't. I buggered my left collar bone and my left hand. The hand is healing faster. I need to do an engine swap and other big stuff to get the GS road ready. I wrecked my Kat 750 GS was to be a winter project. It's not possible until I can put pressure on the collar bone. I'm wondering how long these things take on average.

Damit I want to ride !!

Broke my left collar bone in 2000. Took about 6 weeks before I could ride without major pain. I did try to ride about 4 weeks after my wreck. Only did 5 miles, braking was too painful. A fractured sternum did not help. I was riding my new TLR for the first time. After about 8 weeks I was able to ride comfortably again.

bar risers might get you back on the bike a bit quicker too.  I would think it would put a little less stress on that area.

I can move the arm but not fast or to high. I can't put to much pressure on it feels ike it will brake again. I had my left index finger pointing in a direction it was never ment to go. It's mostly straight now.

I'm back playing Tac Ops ( Video game ) to strengthen my fingers.

I also bought a 1978 Suzuki PE100 enduro. It's lighter and should be easier to get back on sooner.

Thanks for sharing.

I broke my left collarbone and partially tore the rotator cuff in my left shoulder in July last year.  It broke right at sholder end.  I rode again 2 weeks later.  The broken collar bone didn't heal.  I'll be 72 years old if I make it till tomorrow.  :thumb:

A couple years earlier, I broke my left wrist and was riding again 2 weeks after surgery to put a steel plate in it.  Radius bone was broke right at wrist joint.  I had on old CM400A Hondamatic that I rode for a month since I couldn't pull the clutch enough to ride the GS for about 6 weeks.

I do have the GenMar risers on my GS that relieve the weight on my wrists a bit.

I broke my left collarbone and had my shoulder dislocated in a fight once. The collarbone "healed" well enough to ride in about a month. I don't think the dislocation ever healed as I cannot to this day raise my left arm above head level. If the bike has a standard seating position I'd say you should be able to ride by now, but if you start putting stress on it I think it will probably break again. Remember to drink lots of milk for the next few months...bones love that calcium for the healing and growing process. Love the GS500 and the forum.
