OK since no one seems to be able to answer this...
My eli 900 has had a cracked head and all its radiator fluid ended up in the crank case... Now the crack was sometime back in 2000/2001 and it just sat till now, I also have a tendency to use only distilled water in the radiator... and the drained oil/water was green and clean and not rusty...
so what ill effects can there be of having a crank case full of water for 3 years. Bike just sat, and was never even started in that time.

From my experiences with water in the oil, as long as the engine has not been started the oil just collects in a ball at the bottom of the oil. I would venture that as long as you haven't started it and you drained it all out, there will be no reason for you to shout and pout. Love the baby G and the forum, including the "MOO" guys.

Yeah, I agree. I had a CR125 that busted the impeller shaft on the water pump and filled the crank case full of coolant. It happened on the last ride of the season and the bike sat like that for about 4 months before I noticed it. All in all, it just required some cleaning out. I never saw any ill effects from it, just milky oil and some rusty residue inside the cover. Of course I had to run the bike and drain/flush the system 3 or 4 times since I was riding the bike in that condition for a little while without realizing it.

OK The time lines... 2000 winter - bike comes home. I drain the radiator and fill back up with distilled water. Its got some radiator fluid in it... I add water only I think. Bike runs like crap.
2001 Summer I start the bike and notice its running better (carb issues) but bubbling in the radiator overflow ... I shut it off (cant have been more thna a cup of water level drop in the overflow.
2004 summer I look in the radiator and it looks empty, and I add distilled water, and radiator fluid and add and add and add .... till there is 3 gallons of it and it gushes out the crankcase vent ... then I drain it, and see very clear green, about 2 gallons, and then comes ~ 1 gallon of clean clear oil...
So 3 years it had maybe 2 cups of water... it was run a little as the water was getting in. Then it got filled up with water, and got drained the next day. Can see some very light rust on the con rods, none on the crank and further in... I cant see. So what'ya think...

Ah heck Srinath, it probably just emulsified a little bit and as long as it didn't cause any scoring of any of the bearing journals it should be ok. I'd just run some type of cleaner through it along with the oil and keep draining it until it looks clean and ride the fire out of it. Surely it can't be a whole lot different than when the same thing happens to a small-block Chevy et al. Love the baby G and the forum.

basicly saying, what "COULD" have happend with water sitting in crankcase, is some steal parts COULD have rusted lightly if at all, gears,oilpump picup, mostly dependant on how much water. you could drain it and run it and take the chance its ok down below (hence the russian roulette discription) the alternitive is to rip it All the way down and see first hand.
1-2 cups for 3 years... water entered when the bike was idlling...
The 3 gallons for 1 day... water was clean and green, then oil was clean oil colored.

WOuldn't worry too much about it. Might get some corrosion on the internals, but since there was oil in there too I doubt it would deteriorate to a point of no return. I'd fix the coolant leak (duh!!), change the oil, run the bike for a while, and change the oil again. That should cleanse a lot of the surface crap.
