Title: Powder coated handlebars... sand it...
Post by: The Buddha on August 09, 2004, 10:18:55 AM
OK I have had some issues with teh bars after I powder coated them...
the bars were just the right thickness before, and powder coating has added a 1-2 100 ths to the thickness. Now The brake side and most of the fittings should just go right on it... and not even make any diff, but the clutch fitting and the throttle grips might need some work.
Clutch fitting has a compressing ring band... i have usually been sticking a screw driver in the opening and opened it up a little , so it will slide off the old bar and on the new one easier... That might be all you need...
The throttle grip, it it binds... use some sand paper and sand off the powder coating on the bar. Just enough to let the thing fit and rotate... It will come off easy, its not metal... Just wanted to let everyone know.
Cool.

Title: Should
Post by: The Buddha on August 11, 2004, 09:30:51 AM
Should have done it sooner... I am kicking myself everyday... The best thing is... the bars had a bit more rust... cos of the whole electrical fire disabling the shop for ~2 weeks... and the powder coaters didn't even blink... they say... oh yea it sticks to slightly roughed up surfaces better and they just didn't care... and they had a bunch of other stuff in the shop that looked like it sat outside for ages... and all of that made no difference. Just sand the right grip area... the clutch fitting should be pried open a little to come off the old bar... should let that slip on the new one...
Cool.

Yup its on thick.... but only take off enough to have the throttle turn freely... and you might have some powder coating left still protecting it...
Cool.
