Title: Need a paint scheme?
Post by: akh223 on August 11, 2004, 12:46:09 PM
I am going to be repainting my tank, rear grab bar, and both frame covers silver to match the frame.  Can anyone think of a good accent color and design that wouldnt be to difficult to paint.  I am ok with a spray paint can, but not any good with an airbrush.  I am not an artistic one, so whatever I make will have to be taped off and definately not freehanded.

Silver's going to fade to nothing out and about.  I'd say complement it with red.  Faux flames?  Stripes?  Actually, I wouldn't paint it.  I'd get some red vinyl and go to town.  It'll stay on as long as you want, and you can change it at whim.

well first off, we all know straight primer adds 10-15 hp.  so you might want to try that.  and if not that, i'd probably go with teal an fuscha, maybe a little muave though for accent.

in all actuallity, i'm a fan of anything and black.  red/black, orange/black, yellow/black, green/black.  you get the idea.

You can always use pinstripe tape to cover up botched lines.

Can you get red reflective vinyl?

You could always cover it in alligator skin. (has to be real)  Maybe Ostrich?  Raw leather (with the hair) but i guess that would fall back on furring it...

You guys are funny.

I was actually thinking of using the chalkboard spray paint, claims to tun any surface in to a chalk board.

That way I could carry some chalk and write on the tank for things like directions, maps, fuel calculations, memos, etc!

Keep em coming.

here's the coolest idea i've ever heard that my friend was going to do a while ago, but it will take a mean airbrush artist, and some talent.  get the bike airbrushed like a brick wall, then get friends (like my friend has) who grafitti, and have then graffiti over your bike.  then clear coat over the top, and i'd say it'd be a badass paint job.

Is your bike of the vintage which as a silver engine or black engine? If its a silver engine, silver frame, and silver bodywork, its gonna start lookin more like a nickel then a bike IMO. Also, it will be really hard to match the tank silver to the exact silver on the frame.

If you ask me, we could use some more flamed-out GS' on this board ;)

Yeah, my bike is a 2000, silver frame, silver engine, silver body, silver tank........might just be cool.

Here is my opinion. Paint it Orange/white, with silver accents. Opps! Its already been done! HAHA! I would like to see a candy green. No one paints their bikes green. Has anyone?

This is the color I'm talking about.

I've always liked British Racing Green.  My dad painted his CB450 in a dark green like that, of course it was the original color :dunno:   I do agree that with the right green you could have a really good, unique looking GS

There's that sparkly green, like a bowling ball, like people used to paint dunebuggies (you may still see a trike with sparkly paint).

Regarding masking, there's a great tape called 3M Fine Line.  You can make nice curves with it, and paint won't seep under the tape.   The stock paint schemes have too many straight lines with tight angles for my taste.  Try something swoopy!

Getting both sides of the tank identical, now that could take some work.  Why bother?  Make a swoopy curve that moves from one side of the tank to the other, with one color on one side of the curve, and another color on the other side of the curve.

mine just started leaking oil...  So I was thinking of painting "Harley Davidson" on the tank.

Straight flat black, everything... Like the Robocop cop cars...Maybe an old school WWII fighter plane http://www.fotosearch.com/COR332/3002/ (always loved the GI Joe star deal), or like the big toothy grin scheme they used to do on like, what, P-51 mustangs or something?

Not sure about P-51 Mustangs, but it was a well-known paint scheme on the P-40, particularly the Flying Tigers:Pic 1
