hey guys,
I got the 500f, and was just wondering what you guys do to make the little GS get up. Let me know what you guys find the easiest way to do it.
I have a 15T front sprocket. Sit as far back on the seat as you can, while going 15MPH, grab the clutch, blip the throttle, and release the clutch. I've found that my balance point is right after I can't see the road. After you get it up its all about the throttle control.
at 5-10 mph stand up, push down hard on the front, on the way back up slam the throttle open. I don't really like clutch wheelies, i can't seem to keep them straight.

I had that problem at first, your gripping too tight. Be gentle grasshopper :p
ah cool. ANyone else got anything for me
On my 500F, go about 5 to 10 MPH, clutch it, rev to about 5500k rpm, and ease of the clutch, that seems to get the front up pretty good. Then it's throttle control.
thanks man, that helps. Doesnt it hurt the poor little cluth though?
I can only get my front wheel about a foot and a half or so off the ground revving really high and almost just letting go of the clutch really fast. Does it matter if you have a full tank or anything... any other wierd littel tips you guys have? :dunno:

well, i need to know EXACTLY how you do it, i have been at it all night trying to put my wheel up, and i cant do it. highest ive gone is like less then a foot. Let me know. Thanks
try lowering your tire pressure in the rear..this will help
I actually found a site about wheelies and stoppies for GS500s a while ago. I'll try to find it again and link to it. In the mean time, here is a video from the site of wheelies and stoppies on a GS.
Note: The link to the video will only be temporary so if it doesn't work, it probably means I've found the site and linked to it, so just scroll down...

what you can actually do is find out where exactly your clutch 'bites' / 'grabs' the gears by first slowing and seeing where the GS actually starts to pull you at idle (no throtle and be on level ground).
once you know where that spot is, hold the clutch an inch [try two the first time, ONLY move closer to that spot if you are having trouble wheeling] before that spot, going about 10-15mph in first gear, revved the engine till you are at 8.5-9.5 RPMs. let go of the clutch and front end will come up.
[if you find yourself involuntarily lurching forward the first time around, you are getting closer to your wheelie so you need to revv engine a little higher maybe to 9-10RPMs, front will come up nicely.]
make sure you cover the rear brake [and pull in your clutch] and tap tap tap a couple of times if you even think you are about to flip over. don't know if you have GS500F so if you do take of the fairings now and WEAR YOUR GEAR!!

What I said before gets mine up fine, maybe rev yours a little higher. At 5500 RPM, it will bring mine up to about 10:00.

yeah, i have been trying exactly what you said before, stayed up till 2am trying to do it. so i dont know man.
Give it more gas and get the rpms up there. Some people say 8 or 9k rpm, but mine doesn't take that much. Be careful!

yeah, i am, i only do it in parking lots. I always wear my gear.

thx man
I have a feeling clutch wheelies are pretty hard on the chain.
I only tried to do a wheelie a couple of times (dunno, maybe 7 times, and I wasn't to brave about it) since I got a new chain and just today I've noticed it'll need tightening! And I take good care of it otherwise.
D.

I'm actually having a lot of trouble finding that website; I searched for over an hour :? Anyway, if I can find it eventually, I'll definantly make a point to posting it. As for the video I've linked to, I'll keep it up until I need the webspace.

I think this is what you were looking for.

could someone tell me what year or so that bike in the vid is and do you know if they have lowered handlebars on it? I'm looking for a GS and really like that one.
here is another video....it me doing wheelies
http://www.eachosting.com/~gru/GRU/Video/gs_wheelies.wmv
and yes, it does hurt the chain....i streched my chain a lot by doing wheelies so now i'm doing stopies

Not the same site but this one seems pretty cool too :thumb:

I wish I could remember... I think it was mid-late ninties. Again, if I find the site, I'll post it and it will say what it is

Those were pretty cool, how much does it damage/stretch the chain? And while were on the subject, how do you do stoppies? I've put some effort into figuring it out myself but I'm too afraid to try hard enough.

Upon further inspection, that video is on this site too and the caption does say it was made my one of the admins or something. Maybe the site I've been trying so hard to find is this guy's old page or something. Whatever, I give up. The video I linked to is on here, called wheelies.avi. Unfortuantly I haven't found a detailed desciption on this site of how to actually do the wheelies and stoppies. Maybe I haven't looked hard enough. Thanks robo.
no offense guys but those stunts are pathetic...they have squid and wannabe written all over them. if you are gonna play do it real or stay on the side and watch
here is how we do it in the maritimes

That would the difference in our little 500's and the supersport 600 and up. More power and better braking on supersport. Our little GS's will do what they do.
actually the more i ride the GS the more i like it. just plain fun and does not cause as much trouble as the litre bikes :nono:

Your little GS will ride a wheelie just fine. You guys just need to learn how. When my buddy gets back from Kosovo I'll make a video for you guys :p
Mine will do it just fine, I can pull it up to 10:00 and ride it for quite a distance with no problems. I really don't want to ride one at 80 mph going down the interstate anyway, that is just plain stupidity.

man, you need to give 100% details, i got the exact bike as you, so it will help me. I want everything from the starting of your bike, to putting your kickstand down. Lets us know. Thanks man, appreciate it.
I start walking out to the bike, when i get there i put my key in, just kidding, let's get straight to it. When rolling slowly (5 to 10MPH) thru a parking lot or down a back road, ease in on the clutch, let out on the clutch to locate where it catches, pull back in slightly, rev up to 5k to 6k rpm and let out the clutch. Front comes right up. My buddy has to give his a little gas to get his to work, I think about 7k. I found that when i rev it up and just drop the clutch, the front will come up, but the back tire will bark. The slower I start, the better it works. Oh yeah, when done, I park, shut the bike off and put the kickstand down.
exactly tdan!
that what I've been saying, you have to find out where the clutch 'catches' / 'bites' / 'grabs' the gears. once you know that you'll be popping wheelies with more 'style points.' [WEAR YOUR GEAR] now you know, and knowing is half the _________. once you pop your first wheelie, feel in the blank.
I'm in the process of getting rid of the GS400 and I got a Yamaha Maxim 700. Weighs about the same but with 85HP. I'm terrified to try to do a wheelie hehe. It can do stoppies quite well though, dual front disks.
I put my bike on the centerstand and adjusted the clutch so that it grabbed an inch from the bars. Seems to make things much simpler.

Alright man, cool, does your chain lossen up when you do this? I did it once the chain was just hanging. Let me know about yours.
Maybe a little, I lube and adjust it (if needed) every 600 Miles. It depends on how hard you drop the clutch. One day, I reved very high dropped the clutch, front came up, back tire barked, then proceeded to the house. Every time I would downshift, I heared a new noise. The chain was so loose it was sagging and hitting the center stand. With as many times that i have done it, I would have to say no, it is not stretching the chain. I know that this is BS, because it is stretching it.
Hahahah: http://tuxserver.dyndns.org/%7Emartin/gs500e/video.html
It actually links to the same video as that other site but has a pretty good explaination. :thumb:
another thing that i don't think was mentioned, the less gas you have the better. After filling up, it makes it almost impossible, but when the tank is low or on reserve, it makes the bike alot lighter, in return, coming up easier and higher.
sweet!
drop some PSI in the rear tire for better bite, between 20 and 25 would be fine depending on weight, full tank does make it harder to come up fast, but will help stablize the weight transfer (it will come up slower and alittle more predictable, wont be so twitchy once up) and will help hold the sweet spot. KEEPING YOUR ASS IN ONE SPOT IS PARAMOUNT untill you get good, Work the bike around your weight for the time being, get use to the feel of up, keeping from over rotating and setting back down controlably. then work on ballence left to right, or standups. you can move your body all over the bike once you can control the bike comfortably.
The White Owl seems to come up pretty easily, doing the roll along at 10 mph or so, clutch-in, throttle-up, clutch-out thing. Haven't tried from a stand-still, but anymore I'm a big chicken when it comes to stuff like that...I'm already on crutches, no need to push it huh? And I'm still surprised at the number of people who think the Baby G is a snail...I have wrung it up to about 60-70 mph a few times and it gets me there pretty darn quick. Not a rocket sled but gives me a rush anyway...I must be getting old, it don't take shaZam! to thrill me anymore. I love the snail of a GS and this forum.
C.......
Hahaha, funny to read how people look for my site........ And yes, Martin has a good explanation on his site about making wheelies. :thumb: :thumb:
