Title: Pic of crash I saw on my trip cross country
Post by: john on August 18, 2004, 09:42:34 AM
(http://svjohn.trix.com/trailercrash.jpg)

Now what you may not be able to see is the burger and fries scattered next to the driver's window    This was right out of Flagstaff and conditions were stormy and windy.  I don't know who was hurt, if anyone, but some woman was screaming "Oh my God!" over and over again.  There were already like 10 cars stopped and helping so my help wasn't necessary and the popo were just arriving.

Amazing how the trailer just shredded   Man I hope nobody was back there.

whoopsie!  :o

You know, my dad always said "when you add an element of danger, you must also subtract an element of danger."

Example: if you add rain, subtract speed

So if you add a heavily loaded trailer and wind, maybe you should subtract the burger & fries.

on another note: hopefully everyone is ok.

I thought the SUV was towing a trailer with ATVs in it...

anyone notice all these rolled over SUV's always flatten the roof? maybe instead of putting DVD players in the dash, they should save that money and use it to install some friggin roll-bars!

Can someone tell the owner of that truck his lights are on?

But seriously, I hope everyone got to walk away from that accident.

Some thoughts and observations:

1. The SUV was lifted.

2. Looks like it was pulling an enclosed quad trailer.

3. There still was "some" headroom available. If they were belted in they could have survived.

4. Burger and fries + Freeway Speed = Flirting with disaster.

It looks stock to me.  The well gap will be greater with only the wheels compressing the suspension and not the weight of the whole SUV.

Come on Ed_in_Az ... The people that have to drive these road blocks didn't get that way by not eating burgers and fries and burgers and fries and burgers and fries .....
Cool.

Well certainly the distraction of eating food while towing a trailer in windy/rainy conditions was not a good idea.  Trailer sway needs immediate correction or it can get ugly real fast.

You could be right. Thankfully I've never had my truck belly up to compare. But, mine is lifted.

sounds more like overconfidence in his/her skills given the conditions, i have no quams about driving slower so i dont have to make Big or overly fast corrections with large or heavy loads. hell, pulling things is its easyest to eat while driving cuz i am going slower and its likly a surpise is going to catch you off gaurd.  unless its a standard then i wait to eat, thats just too much. plus we dont know what shape the tires were in, inflation, total weight and how it was distributed. looks like it was a camper top on the truck and a trailer holding 2 maybe 3 4wheelers and posibly other gear.   its 4x4 but not a dualie, without really being there, i would have to guess there was WAY too much weight on the rear axle
