Title: Restoring a '92 to stock ...
Post by: CalGS on August 24, 2004, 11:07:09 AM
greetings. i'm new to the list, having only recently purchased a '92 GS for my son, who is currently learning to ride.

it is a great bike, but i fear the previous owner has diminished it somewhat in an attempt to make it faster. it came delivered with a Yosh pipe and K&N filter pods. i have replaced the yosh with a stock pipe, and i plan to do replace the filter pods with a standard airbox/filter. but before i do, a few questions:

1) the bike would occasionally stutter when fitted with the yosh, and it still stutters with the stock exhaust system. possibly the jetting was not changed to allow for the greater flow of the K&Ns. if i install the airbox, what are the chances that the jetting will suddenly become "spot on?"

2) does anyone have the specs for the original jetting, on the chance the previous owner monkeyed with it?

3) does anyone have a used airbox for sale? i scanned the classifieds with no luck.

4) how about an instrument cluster (speedo/tach)? this stuff was slightly damaged on mine and i'd love to replace.

great board you have here. thanks for your indulgence.

I have my origional jets and airbox from my 93 if you're interested.

If the brass plugs over the mixture screws are still there, then it hasn't been rejetted. If they are gone, then the bike has likely been rejetted.

When you say stuttering, where in the powerband is it? Does it run fine otherwise?

You might want to put the yoshi pipe up in the for sale section. There is always someone looking for an exhaust. Some are just more pesty about it than others  ;)

Check ebay for an instrument cluster. I know there is at least on up right now. Otherwise you could check the for sale section.

btw, i can't take credit for that pic. I snagged it from this rejetting tutorial (http://www.angelfire.com/mt2/mikesgs500/rejetting/index.html)

Tough to say what the PO has done with jetting without opening up the carbs. Pretty sure it has been rejetted though.

The brass plugs cover the air/fuel mixture screws which affect idle.

Probably best to run 125 mains & 40 pilots. The bikes come lean from the factory. Stock jetting: 122.5 mains & 37.5 pilots

I have an air box but no filter and I do need a pod filter. I am sure I have stock jets as well. PM or email (dgyver@juno.com) me for details.

There are several instrument clusters on ebay.

BTW...the Yosh exhaust is not made anymore and a highly desired sytems to have.
