bought a bike
friend found it for me
never talked to the P.O.
Friend said it ran bad and had been sitting for a couple of months on P.O. front porch.
bike.....2000 SV650 with 30,000 miles, slip on, and lots of bling!!!!
I tried starting it..... didn't want to run....drained about a quart of water out of the tank, cleaned the carbs, stock jetting with exception that the mains are one size bigger. air screws are 2.5 turns out. drained and cleaned the tank, cleaned the fuel pump. new plugs, synched the carbs
the water got in the tank due to the drain next to the cap had come loose from the tank....broke the weld???? I RTV'd it put on a tank bag with plenty of tools for the shakedown run. turned out to be several runs..... :?
here is the STUMP THE SQUID QUESTION.....the bike runs fine for about 30 minutes then starts acting weird.....stumbles at low throttle (<4k) but will clear up with a down shift and WOT. If I let it sit for 1 hr, it will cool down and run good.....till it heats up and starts running bad again
WTF is wrong with the bike?????
this thing has been kicking my a$$ for a couple of weeks. I will answer diagnostic questions only.
Clogged line to evaporative cannister or otherwise building-up of vacuum within the gas tank? If you pop open the gas cap after you stop, will it run fine again without waiting for an hour?
45 lookers.....no squid answers....come on....it's for a good cause....
It has a vacuum actuated petcock. That might explain why it runs at WOT but not below 4K. The valve may need to be cleaned. I'm not sure why it would wait 1/2 hour before acting up though. :? Hope that helps.
Rich
actually it has a vacuum actuated fuel pump....cleaned it....still have the problem. thank you for playing...and your help.
the needle needs to be lifted higher (a little)
i had the same problem with my GS....i raised the needle by 1 washer (2 total) and it worked
also might wanna raise the float hight and go at 2 turns out insted of 2.5
just 2 cents :)
Have you completely emptied and refilled the gas tank, so you're sure there's no water in it still?
Have you replaced the plugs and checked the ignition system?
Perhaps the carbs need rejetting with bigger pilots since you have a low throttle problem?
PS- If I win, give my 10 bucks to GStwin.
Wait a minute---Is there coolant in the radiator? That would cause a problem due to heat, and WOT would be better than low throttle because with a slip-on can the mains are probably a bit rich. Hmm.
The only problems with running rough below 4-5 grand that I personally know of have been due to carb icing and a pinched drain hose or supply hose from the fuel tank. This was what I heard from the guy who sold Bebe the White Owl. The carb icing was supposedly a problem mainly in colder climate models but J said it does occur in warmer climates with right humidity. Sounds plausible I guess...I used to fly light fixed wing aircraft and they have carb heaters to prevent icing. And belive it or not, icing is more prevalent at temperatures around 50-60 degrees F than lower because lower temps don't support enough moisture in the air. What is the ambient temp you are running at? Also, your altitude. Wish I could ride, still browsing the forum at times.

Petcock too. Actually called the vacuum fuel valve. It draws vacuum off the same carb as the pump on the opposite side of the carb. I had problem with it on my SV race bike. I installed flatslide carbs with no vacuum port. I didn't hook up the vacuum line to the petcock and no fuel flow. I ended up attaching it to the manifold boot after cleaning up the petcock and presto! I still don't know why it would start only after warmup. :dunno:
just so ya'll know i have solved the problem....before I posted this thread!
this is kinda why i posted this....to make ya think..... :?
keep the ideas coming.....it's all there everything i had to work with for the super deduction of the problem....and in hindsight....it makes total sense.....pain in the ass.... but we love bikes for different reasons....and the blue ridge parkway was beautiful today!!!!!
136..... come on....think.....
i'm guessing the P.O. had same problem.........
i'll look this over again wed afternoon
have fun
Valve clearances to tight. Once it gets up to temp there is no clearance and the valves are staying open.
OK....what do I win??
Something with the choke is messed up.
1,000,000 dollars!!! :thumb: :dunno: :thumb: :dunno: :thumb: :dunno: :thumb: :dunno: :thumb:  :thumb:  :thumb:  :thumb:  :thumb:  :thumb:  :thumb:  :thumb: :thumb:
you changed the rear tire???
j/k

That's what I was thinking. Did someone forget to turn it off once on the road?
Ever notice how once you learn a thing or two about engines, you always think dooms day when something is wrong?
I'm gonna get away from the fuel system and say it's (was) a charging problem. Battery, shorted wires, or stator from the water which undoubtedly went other places if it got into the tank.
Bad needle valve in a carb.
Are you missing a needle in the carb?
MacDuff
The slide holes are drilled too big
Rich jetting... or some radiator shaZam!...
Cool.
Srinath.
You put ony enough gas for 30 minutes, after that the engine dies...
this happens only once reaches certain temp? this happen the same way if sitting for 10 mins?
back to the top..... if yall give up i'll just send the $ to john.....
i dont know if bikes even have one... but here goes
temp gauge stuck open or malfunctioning? causing the bike to over heat? or are sv's air cooled
sorry maybe anoob answer but i tried!
TPS or IAT...I think those have 'em anyway...at least a lot of bikes made now do. A guy bought a new one at the dealer about a week ago. Told 'em he'd been riding for years. They started wondering what he had been riding when he kept putting it all the way down and then one up for first, killing the bike when he tried to take off. They finally had to show him where first gear was. He wrecked real bad just 4 miles from the dealer. Love the GS500 and the forum too.

Pure shot in the dark: Some critter had built a nest in a sensitive location. (air filter?, obstructing cooling air?)
Just a crazy thought...is your tank bag preventing your gas cap from venting? I suppose it's possible :?
I AM the guru of SV jetting and I can tell you that 1 jet bigger than stock (140) and 2.5 turns is fine. Check to see if there is a shim under each needle - maybe 2. If not at least add 1. Water is not nice to carbs but you would have seen corrosion.
not sure if anyone has suggested this, as i havent read the whole thread. my brothers cbr 250 used to run like a dog and we had it tuned by a proffesional and it had a "soft" spot from 4,500 to 8,000 . turns out it was something in the ignition. a new cdi fixed it.
We have a WINNER! ! ! ! ! !
think outside the box people.....
the first person got the problem.... but not the cause!
the tank was vapor locking....as the fuel left the tank....30 minutes.....the space was NOT replaced with air....since the tank bag rubber anti-scratch bottom formed a PERFECT seal to the top of the tank. I pulled over on side of road and when i pulled the tank bag off....it had a vacuum formed impression on the rubber and a sucking noise from the tank....the tank vacuum was higher than the intake vacuum at low speeds.....therefore fuel starvation!!!! when opening the throttle....the intake vacuum increased above the tank vacuum and it ran. Hindsight....the problem with the fuel cap drain.... since the tank was in a vacuum condition... the tank contracted....until the drain connection failed. I repaired the drain connection and caused the same problem.
John is the winner for reading into the problem. I caused the problem by taking a tank bag full of tools to fix a problem....that i was causing.
I fixed the problem on the side of the road by taking a bandana and laying it on the tank.....breaking the seal....rode the last 80 miles home shaking my head for....not thinking. I should now have a reliable bike to ride..... until i fix another GS up.....the SV is kinda boring...i like shifting and wringing the shaZam! of of a bike....and only going 65-70.... the SV will pull itself out of a 20mph corner in third.... i never shift anymore.... :(
John i'll PM you for your addy and donation....take the woman out to eat...better than MC-D's....
...and all this time I thought we were trying to help you fix a problem you hadn't already solved! Silly me.
I knew there was a reason I always moved my magnetic tank bag up far enough to reveal a bit of the gas cap. I always suspected it could cause a problem...
QuoteSV is kinda boring...i like shifting and wringing the shaZam! of of a bike
Ill trade you, my GS, extra engines wheels and parts, for your GS, its titled an registered.
Errr Your SV rather.
...... I wanted a SV for....5 yrs... i think i'll frankenbike it for a while.
:?

I had one for a couple years. It was indeed a fun bike, but I tired of it. Anne didn't want it, and it shifted like shaZam! right out of the box. The whole "wait a few thousand miles and it will improve" BS was just that: BS. If a bike shifts bad when new it will probably shift bad forever.
Perhaps if the tranny was good I would have kept it longer...
Anyone know of a basket case SV laying around??
I think werase has one!

high pipe slip on
and ugly dirt bike handle bars
and horrible funky headlights....for sale....E-me if you want pics
and it was definately affordable!!!!!
