Does anyone know what this hole in the upper part of the rear fender (under the seat) is for?

Looks like water and dirt could fly off the rear wheel through this hole and up under the seat.
Thats the part that fits under the rear of the seat, near the tail section. There is usually a tool kit that sits inside the rear tail bodywork. It has a thick rubber strap that holds it in place with a rectangular metal ring at each end. These metal rings hook onto that plastic tab to hold the tool kit down tight (effectively blocking the hole).
That's just so that the hook pantablo mentions can be injection moulded. The hole should be covered by a black plastic sticker, but this often gets damaged by pebbles trown up by the tire.
Clean it from the underside and stick some duct tape there. If you ride in wet conditions that hole will mess up everything under the seat. Been there, done that.
My '02 didn't have a sticker covering this hole. Would adding duct tape count as another original modification? If you're missing the rubber tool kit strap...I'm sure one of those small bungee cords with modified hooks will work too. Hey, there's another one for the mod list.
hijack.
luksi is that a giant snapper photochopped onto your bike?

Like so:

Here's the same area with my registration info (in a Ziploc bag under the tool kit) and

I'm glad you asked the question, John. :thumb: I always wondered why there was so much dirt under my seat -- dirt that obviously arrived wet and then dried. The next time I have the rear wheel off I'm gonna put some tape down there! (The holes are not covered on my '99.)
Well I'll be darned! :? I would never have figured that in a million years.
A strap to hold the tool kit.
My tool kit is crammed back in the tail. It ain't goin nowhere. I also have a pair of work gloves packed in there. Heck with the strap.
But I do need a plug for that hole. I'll check the hardware store.
Could just gum it up with silicone caulk. Might look messy though.
Duct tape? That would work for a while, but tends to fall apart under harsh conditions. (nice try luksi)
Kerry, I also have my registration in a Ziploc bag, same place. :thumb:
Thanks for all the input guys.
I think C..... has the right idea. Great bike, great forum.
