Does anyone have a circuit diagram for a 1989 GS, I am having trouble keeping my battery charged and I would like to try and see if there is a short or an open circuit.
There are some good diagrams in the Clymer manual. If I had a scanner I would load them, but I don't, sorry. But, I guarantee one of the GS500 guru lords will be along to assist you shortly if you just hang in there. I've heard it said..."you meet the nicest people on a Honda bike...", but I say to you "you meet the nicest people on a baby GS and the twin forum". Now, burn incense and wait patiently...it will come.

This one is for 90 - 96 however to me it appears the same as the 89 except for the physical location of the fuse.

It could simply be that the battery won't take a charge any more. Ordinary lead-acid batteries like the OEM GS one get literally shaken to bits in motorcycles - the electrolyte paste falls off the lead plates to the bottom of the battery, and they stop working. Before messing with the charging system, try a new battery. Reckon on 2 years max for a standard GS battery. Sealed gel type batteries don't suffer from this.
The yellow wire off the alternator had burned and broke. I havent been able to check and see if it works yet, but do you think that it did any damage to the alternator? I spliced and repaired all three wires off the alternator so hopefully this will fix it. Thank you all for the advice and the diagrams.
