Title: Lookin to replace my chain.
Post by: red_phil on September 01, 2004, 05:04:13 AM
Hi,
I'm looking into replacing my chain and sprockets.

I was hoping somone might point me in the right direction
for a 15T front sprocket,
a standard rear sprocket (how many teeth is that anyway?)
and a good chain.

I'm hoping to make this cheap, obviously, but a good chain is an investment.

Anyone got any advice / warnings?

See my GS500 Chains & Sprockets (http://www.bbburma.net/Documents/GS500_Chains&Sprockets.txt) list for a sampling of brands, sources and prices.

The OEM chain on the GS500 is a  D.I.D. unit.  Most years came equipped with an O-ring chain, but some had an X-ring chain instead.  I replaced my original D.I.D. X-ring chain with a less expensive D.I.D. O-ring one.  (See the thread what size chains are on the gs stock (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10051).)  Perhaps others have experience with non-D.I.D. chains?

Sprocket Specialists make fine sprockets, but their offering for the GS500 is only designed for the '89-'93 model years.  I replaced my OEM front sprocket with one from JT Sprockets and have been very satisfied with it.  I don't have experience with other brands.
