Title: 15 tooth front sprocket/chain replacement
Post by: gryhound89 on September 05, 2004, 01:39:16 PM
Greetings....

I just finished replacing my chain and sprockets.  The chain was worn out, and as long as I was in the neighborhood I wanted to replace the sprockets as well.  I dropped down one tooth on the front to a 15.  The bike feels like it accelerates a little harder, but I didn't really beat on it too much yet.  The only previous experience I had with gear ratio changes was in a 5.0 mustang, went from 3.27 to 3.73.  That was a HUGE difference, stomp on the gas and it would get sideways in a hurry.  The sprocket change was no where near as dramatic.  I used the rivet style master link, I bought the $25 motion pro tool that presses the link on, and I beat the rivets down with a ball peen hammer, using a 2 pound sledge as a backing.  Next time I do this I will spring for the motion pro tool for the rivets.  Overall the job was very easy.  I do have one question though:  the chain I got was a 530.  It was wider than my original chain.  Installed on the new sprockets, this chain has some side to side play.  The original chain and sprockets had none.  I suspect that the guy at the parts store gave me the wrong diameter chain.  The new and old sprockets had the same diameter.  Is that side to side play going to be a problem, should I put a new chain on it?  That'll be a kick in the wallet but oh well.  this is the first time I've ever worked on a bike (although I've been working on cars for years) and you have to start learning somewhere....
QuoteA good mechanic always has parts left over; it means he's better than the engineer that designed it.....

Oops.   :?

Your original chain was a 520-width jobbie.  I don't know what the ramifications are of leaving the 530 on there.... :dunno:

me thinks it could be useable as long as your alignment is spot on,
but dunno, i could be wrong on that... :dunno:
