In a search for tires for another bike I found some info on times by SHINKO which appears to be a division of Yokohama Tires a company known for quality automotive tires. The SHINKO "006" Podium Radial is first a radial tire and second is offered in sizes that might fit the GS500. They list a 110/70ZR17 front and a size not common to the US market in a rear 140/60R17 in a rear fitment. The 140/60 might fit the stock GS500 rear wheel better than the 150/60 that many fit on their GS500.
Now to add to the news the tire are on sale at Azmotorsports for $49.99 for the front and $64.99 for the rear in these sizes.

According to this page (http://www.shinkotire.co.kr/product/em_radial.htm), the 140/60 is recommended for 4 inch rim. The GS stock rear rim is 3.5 inch I believe.
The stock rear tire is 130/70, so 140/60 is wider and less thick. About 7mm less thick (91mm for 130/70 vs. 84mm for 140/60) just from calculating the profile numbers (although in actual measurements I am certain it will be slightly different). Since the 140/60 is wider and thinner, and it has to squeeze into a 3.5 inch rim, it might get a little rounder or squarer than it is designed to be.
Probably it will fit, but it might pinch the tire a bit and make the curvature funny. Pantablo once put a 150/60 tire on his GS before and noted that it wore funny at the edge (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11820&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=150&start=20). Still, every model is different in its measurements/tolerances. Besides, 140/60 is not far from stock compared to 150/60. The only way to really find out is to try it (since no one else in this forum has claimed to have). If it works well, then it is a great deal for radial tires. Otherwise just get different tires next time. I doubt if there is any harm in trying (at least I personally wouldn't worry about trying it myself), so just go for it and pave the way.

140/70 no problem ... 60 .. that side wall being so short will act stiffer ... but still should fit ... some 140's act like they are narrower, some act like they are fatter ... try it and see whihc one it is ... I have a 200 on my eli which I swear acts like its narrower than the avon 180 others have ... Good for bragging rights ... but little else ... BUT hey mine is harder compound and its a metzler ... whooo hooo ...

This post just reminded me that I read a private message from you recently on my way out and forgot to reply when I came back. Sorry, Rippa. :oops:
I have no experience with the new to our market Shinko tires and can only guess about them handling wise and wear wise. They are listed as sport tires, not sport touring, so they probably will handle better than the AV45/46 tires but maybe give only half the life. I would not hesitate to try the them myself except for the tire life factor. Riding 15-20k miles a year, I need the longer life radials.
The 150/60 tires are the same OD as our OEM 130/70 tires and the 140/60 are about 1/2" smaller in dia. I have not found any tire mfgs in this country recommending the fitment of either size radials on our 3.5" rims, but I found a BT92 tire (not sold here) on the Japan Bridgestone site that seems to be approved for fitment of the 140/60, 140/70, and 150/70 on 3.5-4.5" rims.

Where there is a choice like the Shinkos, I'd probably go with the 140/60. I'm aware of Pablo's opinion regarding this size, but would suggest that there are not too many of up riding at the pace he is now riding. :(
