Title: Suggestions for bolt-on goodies?
Post by: photog on September 07, 2004, 06:19:05 PM
I've got an 89 GS500 that I plan to use as a track bike and playbike. Has anyone had any experience bolting on goodies from the bigger suzooks? I'm interested in forks, wheels, and swingarm swaps.

I'd like to keep the bike nimble with big emphasis on braking. I've had a hawkGT with a CBR front-end swap that gave me dual disks and a better fork...looking for the same sort of conversion suggestions.

By the way, it'll need to be cheeeeeep.  :P

thanks!

Rather than do that just upgrade the rear shock, and buy a racetech emulator kit for the forks.

thanks!

Lots has been done in the past.

-Gsxr fork swap is a common thing to do-check my site for some info and do a search on this site for more info.
-wider rear wheel (for better race rubber). 88-89 gsxr750 or bandit 400 rear works
-rear shock upgrade

some have gone to great lengths:
-rear swingarm from rgv250 (?) or gsxr
-heavily reworked motor

Title: Hawk...

The F2 front end you slapped on the hawk... will fit in the GS as well... I am in charlotte, I can show you the mods to be made to it... or just explain on the site... maybe with pic... but its easy. The F2 used same OD neck bearings as GS and its Id on the lower bearing is 1 mm bigger... but anyway you just need to take 7mm off the bottom of the F2 stem... and its a straight fit... steering stops and loks also will fit off the Gs I believe.
Cool.

Whoa! Great tips! I officially take possession of the little critter today and I can't wait to get it home. It's been sitting up for almost a year (but it does run...a bit lumpy with old gas in it) so first order of the day will be new gas and seeing what I need to do to clean the carbs.

Thanks for the input so far, and keep posting. It's appreciated!

An SV650 chain guard will fit.  Lots of those in the aftermarket world.

Just picked it up and took it to my off-site storage shed. Found out that it was built 11/90, making it a 91. Hope that's a good thing. Mileage is 9178.

Looks like it's complete except for a few items like centerstand, mirrors, and choke (the owner did throw in a Pitbull stand). Has an aftermarket can on it (loud...aagh! okay for track but I like less noise). Brand new tires front and rear (Metzler bias ply...550's or something along those lines).

I'll probably just have enough time to get it cleaned up, given a minor tune, and wired for the track/school day. After that ride, I'll decide on the goodies based on how it does and the suggestions here.
