Title: Exhaust Note Changing?
Post by: AR5ENAL on September 08, 2004, 12:04:11 PM
Hey all.  I installed a full Jardine system along with K&N pods and rejet a few weeks ago.  As soon as I started the bike up, I was overjoyed.  Loud, rumbly and deeeep....the thing sounded like a Ducati Monster.  Blipping the throttle between downshifts was now the stuff of heaven....until about two days ago.  My pipe has picked up this strange metallic sounding harmonic that I really don't like...for a couple reasons: 1-It's LOUD...a little louder than the normal rumble, and 2-it's tinny, so no more super-deep rumbly sound.  I checked the can, and it's intact...nothing wrong there.  I'm 99% sure there aren't any leaks anywhere, but I'll double check and retighten the header bolts this weekend...My question is whether this is just the exhaust settling down or not.  Could it just be settling down to its natural sound (which, unfortunately, isn't the cool one)?  Anyone who could help on this, jump in!

can't help you with the problem but i would love to see a pic of the bike with the can on it and find out how much it cost  :)
Title: Tinny...
Post by: The Buddha on September 08, 2004, 12:26:21 PM
Jardine cruiser cans (rip off of V&H in many ways) are very tinny. They use 18 guage sheet metal by their own admittance (On american thunder ~ 2 years ago) and evidently that 18 guage instead of 16 guage makes it less tinny....  :?  Which is why I guess the damn thing is tinnier than anything else... V&H and cobra metal is thicker than Jardine BTW in cruiser exhausts. So My final guess is... its tinny because that all it can be. But make sure its not somehting in the motor.
Cool.
Srinath.

My Jardine got louder but never tinnier.  It did blow a ton a packing all over the place while on the dyno, so maybe yours was slingin' stuff too.

Where did you get your Jardine exhaust from? How much?

Check that the exhaust header bolts are tight.  They like to come loose, and with one bolt really loose or gone, there can be some strange vibrations.

Thanks for the replies everyone.  I got the Jardine brand new off another member here, who purchased it new on Ebay, but decided to sell it.  Last I heard, they weren't making them anymore.

Okay, now...on to the problem.  For the first few weeks, it was deep and rumbly.  I've had a few trips through the twisties since then, and now it's slightly tinny.  The clearance with the swingarm was too tight (slight rubbing), so yesterday, I unbolted everything and rebolted it positioning the can a little further from the swingarm.  I checked that the bolts were all tight, and fired it up...still a little tinny.

From what I've been able to isolate, the sound is coming from the can itself.  I felt with my hand (briefly!) for air leaking at any of the connections, and it wasn't.  My guess is that Srinath was right, and the can itself is resonating in a way to produce this sound.

Now....how annoying is it?  I have a titanium Akrapovic can in my closet (for a 2K gixxer 750) with an almost negligible road scrape on it.  I could, conceivably, find someone to weld it onto the Jardine header, and then eliminate the tinny Jardine can entirely.  Akrapovic on the GS?  What do you think?

Rubber washer mounts to isolate the can from the frame?

If you do the welding of the Akrapovic, may I suggest Pipelyne on Lincoln Ave?

Check the packing-  It maybe as simple as 5 bones and 20 minutes of repacking around the baffle.
