I need some suggestions for designing a small storage box or where to buy one for under my seat. I've tried buying a small plastic box with a tight lid to just keep my license and insurance card in for when I'm riding, and nothing will fit under the two metal pieces that hold the seat up. I don't want to add saddlebags or anything else to the outside of the bike because I want those things to be locked up under the seat.
What did anyone out there come up with or is there something I can buy already out there? The little black rubberband they put under there just isn't secure enough and is a pain in the butt to hook on and off.
i like to keep my license in my jacket... that way if i'm thrown off the bike, they'll still know where to ship the body...
as far as useful suggestions... how about an altoids tin? it's sturdy, about the size of an id card and will leave your stuff smelling minty :)
I stuck a copy of my license, my registration and my insurance card inside a zip-loc baggie and held it in place with the rubber strap holding the tool kit in place. Everything else I just shoved under the seat as I needed. I also usually rode with a tank bag.
I put my license and registration in my breast pocket when I'm riding. I don't think Mr./Ms. Officer would appreciate me pulling off the seat and rooting around...

Brilliant! You could even leave some mints IN there....
"Officer, would you care for an Altoids mint while you look up my info? They're curiously strong!"
What???
Were supposed to carry our license with us?
I have a waterproof pouch that is taped to the bottom of my seat
I have been thinking of getting some sport saddlebags, but I havent found anything that fits my price range yet
i dont cary my insurance :dunno:

yeah, that's actually another concern.
i've gone through a couple of road blocks, and the cops were pissed off at me for taking the time to put the bike on the side stand so i could take off my gloves and root in my pockets for my wallet and ID... i'm sure they'd be REALLY ticked if i told them i have to get off, take the bungee net off and look under my seat.
My wallet. Registration, ID, and insurance.

Me too, although I get a 'curiously strong' feeling I'm gonna loose it every once in a while. Hasen't happened yet :dunno:
ziplock baggie with insurance and registration kept in my tool bag. To add more storage, I use one of those hip packs with the zipper, it will fit under the seat between the frame and the right rear plastic. It's big enough not to fall out of the cracks.
My registration & insurance cards stay in a zip-lock bag under the tool kit. Several years ago we went through a license check into a state park, actually the day after 9/11. We had to pull off to the side to get the documents out, which took several minutes. The cops where not upset at all. They were actually very pleased that we were so cooperative.
Only stuff I leave with my bike (insurance card, manual, tool kit, wooden shingle to keep my kickstand from sinking into sand / hot pavement) stays under my seat.
Previously everything else went in my jacket pockets or if it didn't fit, a backpack -- but I just picked up a Super Mini Cortech Tank Bag from helmet harbor and that's been perfect for me. Keys, a map, my phone, my wallet -- that's all I really need on a short ride.
I hated the idea of a huge tank bag sitting between me and the instrument panel, I think they look ridiculous (no offense folks :)). This one is great.

I LOVE the Altoid idea! But maybe I should have mentioned, I'm a girl sooooo I don't carry a wallet and need a little more room than for just license and insurance, like a spot for my lip balm
I think the altoid tin would be perfect though. Cool guys~Thanks!
I love this board almost as much as I love riding little blue...You're my boy blue! you're my boy....
Just be careful when storing stuff in those side crevices on either side of the tail fairing. At least on the '04 model there are 1 1/2 ( ~3cm) gaps where stuff could fall out. I'm thinking of sealing off the underside somehow, probably with a piece of flexible plastic. I once was charging my cell phone while riding, with the adapter jacked into a lighter socket under my seat. When I got to a rest stop I figured I would make a call. I pulled the cord out and lo and behold a frayed wire at the end. :? Turns out my charger fell out the side opening and got yanked under my rear wheel somewhere on the highway. Good thing I wasn't storing a chain under the seat ! :guns: The guys at suzuki could have easily engineered that a bit better because there is like half a foot of cubic space being wasted otherwise.

I stumbled across another possible solution at WalMart tonight.
I ... uh ... hesitate to say what section of the store I found it in. But it's about 5 5/8" tall by 3 3/8" wide by 1 1/4" deep. (By comparison, an Altoids tin is approximately 3 3/4" x 2 3/8" x 7/8".) I made some measurements on the bike when I got home, and it looks like it will fit under the seat supports pretty well.
I myself have been considering buying this.

Are you related to Cernunos? ;)
I've been wondering bout this too, actually. That is some wasted space under the seat since I'm afraid things will fall through. And I do love this forum and the wee GS.
Kerry, Kerry, Kerry...amazing! cute little hair care accessory doubles as a license holder and for only 93 cents. That's perfect...I was on that track and had purchased a small plastic pencil case with a lid, but found it was just a little too big. I will be purchasing one of those tonight. And don't worry, I won't tell anyone you were in the girly section... :thumb:
Ok...before I run to Walmart and head into the girl's section...someone male please confirm that this case was originally intended for holding bobby pins or something other than feminine hygiene products? I've fallen for these kind of tricks before.
I thought about getting one of those travel soap dish things. Do yall think that might work??

I have one of those I'd part with... I sent you a PM.
It was on my bike when I bought it, and I did the fender chop ala Pablo, so it had to go too.
I ended up using a nylon bag, like a cinchable (is that a legit word?) backpack liner to store my stuff. Then I just feed it into those empty spaces and nothing falls out anymore. :thumb:

No "trick" intended, but your fears are ... uh ... well-founded.
So what? Spray paint the thing some "manly" color or something. :dunno: But first let's hear from someone whether it does indeed fit under the seat.
I made a square thing welding up aluminum pipe to the sissy bar... so its now able to carry a vanity case... OK OK I only used it to carry a milk crate... tied on with zip ties...
Cool.
Srinath.
Just a word of warning.....make sure all the bolts that hold the fender well that is under the seat are secure. I use to put all my info under my seat until one day I rode to work and realized when I got there that the bolts had come out.....and all my documentation had fallen out somewhere during my 20 mile trip to work. :o I did luck out in that it must have happend very shortly after I left my house and someone found it and gave it to the police in my town. Nearly scared my wife to death when they showed up at our door :o :o . Anyway, I always keep them either in my jacket pocket or in my tank bag.
