Title: putting on new oil pan and gasket
Post by: jake42 on September 09, 2004, 08:23:53 PM
So I have to put on my new oil pan and gasket tonite.  Can i put a little oil on the mating surfaces to hold the gasket in place.

Clymer's wants you to have the engine out of the bike and upside down when you replace.  Note really practical.

I used gascacinch and glued it to the pan, then put it on. Nooilon the other face, however there must have been a little on the bottom of the engine... BTW mine started leaking Immediately :x ...

Just lay the gasket on the oil pan and lift it in place. Hand tighten each screw while making sure the gasket is indexed correctly. Once all is in place, torque to 7 ft-lbs in cross pattern. Worked for me.

that's what i'll do then.  I dont' have a torque wrnech that goes that low, so I guess I'll just take it eay on those little bolts.

No oil! If you have trouble getting the gasket to stay, buy a spray can of gasket adhesive at the auto parts store. Works pretty well for those tricky gaskets.

actually it was not trickty at all.  Just laid the gasket on the oil pan, lifted it in place and then tightened the nuts by hand, just making sure the gasket stayed lined up.
