Title: Wrecked, looks like this season is over.
Post by: Alias on September 10, 2004, 08:31:06 PM
While pulling into my drive way I hit a patch of gravel while turning an dlocked up the front brake. I was doing 25mph or so. I was thrown from the bike pretty hard. Bent my left peg, scratched my levers and grip. Thats about all the damage to the bike. I'm glad  I had a jacket and gloves, no damage to me except my thumb on my right hand. I think it may be broken. I have it in a brace for now, but its swollen and I can't move it at all.

Completely my fault for riding while tired, with a cold, on cold medicine. I have dealt with this gravel 1000 times before. I don't know why I didn't notice it. I don't really remember what happened.

OK right up there with DUI... OK fine not officially but hey ...
Anyway... I have ridden plenty of times with the cold and usually I am not on cold medication... but its just one of those times. Get better, and I guess no writing for you for a month...
Cool.
Srinath.

Cold medicine and tired are a bad combo. Thats probably why you missed it. But you cant remember what happened...did you hit your head? IF so you should go to a doctor just in case of a concussion.

Good thing you didnt hurt yourself worse...Messed up thumb is the last thing you need when you're already feeling miserable.

Get better.

bummer.
if your thumb is swelling and doesn't move well, go to a doctor and get an x-ray.

My wife seen it happen. She says I hit my  head, but there isn't anything on my helmet. I'm trying to figure out how I hurt my right hand falling on my left side. I have a scrape on my thumb also, but nothing on my gloves. Weird. Getting an X-ray in the morning. Its killing me. It has to be broken, I  never been in pain like this before.

So I woke up this morning with:

Bruised, rashed hip, on the bone (!).
Rashed Knee.
Bruised other Knee.
Bruised and Rashed Elbow.
Pulled something in my shoulder.

I also dented my tank from where the bar hit it, and my forks are twisted. I took it for the most painfl ride of my life, and it still rides starit. The bars are just cocked to the left.

I did hit my head! There is gravel under my visor, and a small scrape on the front of it.  Be CAREFUL guys. It goes to show that you never know what will happen. This is to you guys that ocasionally ride without a helmet in the suburbs.

I feel better. My thumb still hurts but oh well. I took the bike out for a ride today. It felt great! The forks bent right back. All I had to do whas have my Ogre of a grandfather twist the bars while I held the wheel strait. They are leaking like crazy though.

Often the forks are twisted but not permanently bent.  If the fork tubes look lined-up in the top of the triple, then you can loosen the bottom fork pinch bolts, and the fork brace, and bounce the bike suspension.  The fork tubes should straighten right out unless they're truly bent, and you can retighten everything.

If they're uneven where they protrude from the top triple, then you may want to strap the bike up to the rafters, and loosen both sets of pinch bolts too, and get them lined-up again.

It sounds like your grandfather forced them back into a (more-or-less) correct position, but it's probably not as exact as if the tubes settled to the right position on their own.

It's so true...just one small mental mistake and bad things can happen.  Luckly not much damage to you or the bike.  Even if you broke your thumb at least they heal fast  :thumb:  I've broken a few digits and they seem to get better in a few weeks.

I just heard this morning that my Dad dumped his Honda ST1300 yesterday to avoid hitting a car that turned in front of him (in Searcy, tdan).  I don't get the impression that he was going very fast, but he chipped a shoulder bone, tore some ligaments, and got scraped up.

I don't have many more details, but I'm guessing that he was following a little too closely behind a large vehicle.  The driver that turned into his path couldn't see him until it was too late.

:x   :x

At least the driver stayed with my Dad until my Mom and brother-in-law came to collect him and the bike.

This is exact kind of thing that he warned ME about when I first started riding.  Like you said John; one small mental error and -- WHACK!
