Title: Bar Ends
Post by: ponchopirate on September 15, 2004, 05:41:16 PM
I'm looking to buy some bar end weights for my '89 gs500 but the local shop doesn't have any that fit.  Does anyone know what size I need?  I'm also having an ubsurdly difficult time finding them on the internet.  If someone could post a link to a website that sells bar ends that'll fit an '89 gs 500 I'd be very appreciative.  Thanks.

this is probably going to sound retarded, but how important *are* those weights on the ends of the bars?  those honkin' ends look pretty crap, so I was going to make some shorter ones out of aluminum... it's not going to throw off the bike, is it?

I ran without for a while. I got about 45 min till the hands started to go a little numb. I think they are 100% necessary on an 89.  I used to have a 93 with a big wide bar, it didn't seem to have as much vibration.

Does anyone know what the size of the bolt is on universal bar ends.  I bought some that claim to be universal but they don't fit.  Could I just go to a hardware store and buy new bolts that fit my handle bars and use the same bar ends?

I rode without bar-ends for a couple of years, only felt my hands buzzy on long rides, didn't notice any big problem with the bike. I can't tell about '89s couse I have a chromed bar on my Y2K.

If the '89 arrangement was the same as my '96 and '99 then YES.

(See the last table row at the bottom of my Throttle Retainer page.)

flip the little bar around on the clip-ons, then any of the rubber insert stuff works..  p.s. fill the bars with bbs or leadshot it helps a ton.

Are the '89 clip-ons threaded? Or, is it a hollow bar? If it's a hollow bar of 7/8" dia., you should be able to fit Lockhart Phillips barends. I bought a set for the tube bar type, and found them a little buzzy, so I used the rubber parts of the L-P's and went to Orchard and bought 3" screws, wachers and nuts and was able to use the original barends. No more buzz.

89's are threaded... However the ones I make to replace the 89 ones are drilled to take press fit ones.
Cool.

Sweet, I'll just use the barends I already bought and run a 6mm bolt through them... no return hassle.  Thanks all.

Does anyone have the "handlebar snake" to reduce the buzziness/vibration from the bars?

My advice would be to leave the original bar-ends in the bike.

The Suzuki ones are heavier than aftermarket ones and as such, you get a lot more vibrations and problems once you start changing them. I read in a mag that the Suzuki ones are actually made to the correct weight to stop vibrations in the ends of the bars (I found this out long after I'd bought some and fitted them)

I fitted some Motrax ones to my GS500 and the vibrations were terrible. I put the original ones back in and everything was great!

Long live original parts!

As it stands right now, I have no bar-ends on the bike at all.  So I figure aftermarket are better than none.  I returned the previous set I had and bought the "Suzuki" bar-ends from Parts n More. Hopefully they'll help.
