I have put about 600 miles on my new GS500F. It is my first bike. At a stoplight, I leave the bike in first gear with the clutch engaged. When the light turns green, I must rev the bike to 4500k. If I don't get it to 4500k, it dies when I release the clutch. Tonight it died three times.
Are all bikes like this, or do I have a mechanical problem?
how fast are you letting out the clutch??
4500K seems kinda high dont it??? :dunno:
The Gs doesn't make much power below 3-4k rpms so it's not that much above "normal". It may also be your technique contributing to the stalls....As you are letting out the clutch you need to keep on the throttle and increase it as you let the clutch out.
even after rejet, new pipes, advancer etc. my rpm's will climb to about 4000, 4500 when i'm pulling out from a stop. like jared said, keep applying the gas as you let the clutch out.

i can take off at 2000 rpm if i want but i let out the clutch very slowly....4500 is way too high....
can you tell us more about the problem? is the bike always like that? maybe it's running on one cyl (one coil may be bad)
i can take off at 2k if i really nurse it, but on a normal take off, say from a stop sign or redlight i'll climb up to 4 or 4.5k easy. but i also have a 15 up front.

You can also try adjusting the clutch cable. If the cable adjustment is too tight the clutch plate may be engaging too fast, hence the need for higher rpm to prevent stalling.
My 89 has to have the 4500 thing... I belive that is cos I have a kevlar clutch in it... OK never seen it for sure, but friend of mine said it was a kevlar one and I forgot to check it when I had the right side off... but anyway... there is one point around 3/4 of the lever out, where it will grab and stall if I dont have decent speed at that point and good rpm... Mine also has a rich spot at small throttle openings... under 1/4 throttle, cos I believe the float level is high... been creeping up slowly in the 2 years its been since I split open its carbs. Ergo I need to fix mine a bit...
The 95 I am working on has near perfect carburetion and the stock clutch... and 2K is all it takes for a good rider to launch. I do 3K's on it but never had to do more rpm for a launch.

i got a new gs500f and my bike goes with anything over 1,500 k with the clutch engaged, but anything around 2K for a nicer smoother take off. when i hit 4500k i usually just switch gears
I see that there is a big range of opinions on this issue. I guess that I will just continue to release the clutch at 4500.
