god i love this bike....i cant get off it!!!!...but the dam thing took for ever to start up :x ...can some one explaine how i should be using the choke on this bike???? i use full choke for start up..then in a min. or so the RPM's shoot to like 4K....so i ease off the choke..then it stalls....any tips????
also what is an ideal shifting point with the RPM's....engin sound tells me to shift at like 45K...is this right???
If engine is cold you should put on full choke and it should start. Don't use the throttle. The rpms will shootup. You can back off slightly. 3,000 rpm is ok to warmup at. 4,000 is too high.
pull the choke, start her up.
When the revs jump, ease back on the choke just a little until it comes down... repeat until you are warmed up and the choke is off. It is a pain in the arse and it takes a few minutes, but its the nature of the air-cooled beast :dunno:
I always lived between 5-8krpm on my GS. Saved the last few revs for a special occasion ;) Just my 2 cents

Don't use full choke. I pull the lever all the way towards me, back it off a millimeter or two, and then start the bike.

You mean 4.5k, right? For break-in, shifting at 5k is acceptable. And advised.

I do that, then start driving and take off the choke. After that initial point, it doesn't stall as long as I'm on the throttle, and once I'm moving, it warms up to the non-stall point quickly.

At stand still 4,000 is pretty high, you can tell that just from the sound of your engine.
The engine is cold and so is the oil.
Oil has to get warm and up to all the engine parts.
A good amount of wear and tear on the engine is at start up.
Even when you take off take it easy for a mile or so until the engine gets up to it's normal operating temperature.
Don't be afraid to rev it when you break it in. Lugging is worse.
It's good to rev it high from time to time.
I broke in my GS hard and as I did my V-Strom 650.
