Title: Why you all be hatin' on the following bikes...
Post by: sevenbucks on September 23, 2004, 05:56:41 AM
Keeping in mind I've never been on another bike and am relatively new to most of the lingo...
1) Why this attitude towards Katana's, and why do people call them Canned Tuna's? I've caught on to the rhyme, but do they really suck or smell nasty, like Canned Tuna, or something?
2) Are the Triumph sportbikes really the lemons everyone has made them out to be? Do they have a history of suckiness or something?
3) There seems to be a bit of Ninja-bashing that I've seen. Aside from looking a bit less interesting (and the new ones have changed that) is there something inherently bad with them?

Or, is all of this just good natured griping from those of us with the superior bike?

I think this is your answer.  Believe it or not, some folks talk bad about the gs too. :guns:

its the same as people talking down on different cars too, its going to happen its just if you choose to listen or not.

personally i don't have a problem with any type of bike they all have flaws in design. i just like see people ride no matter what they ride.

I used to like Katanas before they started repeatedly beating the front end with an ugly stick. Those headlights are awful.   :?

i just can't handle the ninja because of the name.  riding a ninja would make me feel like i was 12.  i'm not bashing it because it's superior.  i'm bashing it because the name makes me laugh.

triumphs had a history of oil leaks and other problems that just kinda stuck with them, i have one now and i love it, but it doesn't matter what kind of bike it is, whether it's british like a triumph, italian like a ducati, or american like a harley, chances are it's not gonna hold up like a japanese bike, it's just a fact that japanese produce better products, plus the fact that there's so many of them, if someone on a japanese bike gets a problem, they can turn around to any of the 6 japanese dealers in their city, or anyoen that has one for help, the problem i've come across with my triumph, is i've only got on dealership, it's 25 minutes away, and they suck anyway, so it's harder for me to get stuff fixed

katanas are sport touring bikes, they're big and heavy compaired to other sportbikes, but they're still nice bikes, i'd ride one if i had it, but the name doesn't acctually refer to the bike being like tuna, but at one people, someone wanted to make fun of it, and "can a tuna" was the best they could come up with,

as far as ninjas, the new ninja is up to date with the new ones, but i think kawasaki has a problem with keeping up, they make a real nice bike one year, then it sits for 4-5 years while everyone passes it with all the new technology, until kawasaki finally puts out a new bike, so they're not bad bikes, i think kawasaki just can't keep up

1) Katanas were a pretty good bike...  back in 1991. Now they are just old, heavy bikes with bad suspension and really stupid looking bodywork.

2) Triumph carries the baggage of the "good old days" when all bikes were wobbly, unreliable, and leaky.  The new products are very good, have the "mystique" of the brand name, and are as technically competent as anything anyone else is producing.  Most of the trash talk you hear is from people who don't actually own one...

3) The EX500 is the GS's primary competition, both in the market and on the race track. That is where the antagonism comes from. Its mostly good natured...

All above IMHO, etc...

BTW- The ebonics really doesn't impress or make what you are trying to say easier to understand.  Try proper ENGLISH.

Sorry James, let me clarify the subject title as I would never use ebonics to construct a salient topic of conversation...not without laughing.
The subject illustrates the way I'm usually hearing the question posed out in my work parking lot. I guess it was one of those "You had to be there" things and stuck in my mind.

The official new name of the subject is "Why do people complain about the following motorcycles?"

Really, I can ask a question. Really  ;)
Title: Katana...

A Katana has the dubious distinction of being more damageable in a crash than a real sport bike. Have owned an 88 and a 93... nice bikes, and in fact lower than the GS to sit on... but you even say drop and it starts draining your bank account.
Cool.
Srinath.

A major reason I went for the honda 600rr instead of the Daytona 600, which was my first choice. The Honda fit me better too.

Its all good natured.

I don't hate any of the bikes, I love 'em all. I will admit a partiality to HD, but I would never tell White Owl that. Love the bike, the people and the forum.

I don't recall anyone bashing the Triumphs on this board, but then I probably only read 1 out of every 10 threads posted here.
I seem to recall a number of people here that like the Speed 4.
I have two TT600's now!
A lot of the modern Triumph bashing is directed to the fuel injection.

As far as the Ninja's go, I think many GS people are jealous because the EX500 Ninja has water cooling and like 10+ more horsepower.  IMO, I don't think it's as attractive as the naked GS500 though.
