OK Not me... but lets just call him "GS rider"...
So GS rider pays me for the bike and I am delivering it to his house.
OK so I stop for gas... and at the gas station he feels he shoud ride. I rode it for ~ 9-10 miles and I am pretty happy, the thing is nice and torquey to 4K, and runs well after that to the 9K mark. Making more vibes as it goes ... so he wants to test ride it... He said he has ridden in the past and what not, and I have told him how it feels etc, but not once did it strike me that he's not ridden this one, and heck not even asked to ride it... Oh I assumed he didn't cos he didn't have a helmet... and didn't want to wear one I have had lying in a pile of crap... OK.
The bike is parked at the pump... he has no gloves no helmet and evidently no sense of balance or clutch or power or... But... wait.
So the bike starts and he pulls in the clutch, and puts up the stand... and I am not thinking anything bad is going to happen... OK he revs up just fine not too much ... and he lets out the clutch and the bike rolls forward and he seems fine and all of a sudden the bike revs way up... his clutch is pulled in and he starts to let it out and he lurches forward... and I am thinking oh... what... and he's at this point running toward the curb... and I'm like he better start turning right... and he does but revs still up and clutch is still pulled in... and all of a sudden he lets the clutch out... and the bike shoots forward and he's now running along the curb... toward the back of some guy's truck... OK and he manages to squeeze in the gap between the curb and the truck, catching a trash can, then the air pressure/vacuum thing with his head/face and the whole time his left shoulder is rubbing up against the truck... making him trapped in that gap... and he gets ahead of the truck and down he goes...
Now for the damage His back is swollen his left shoulder and arm are hurt, and his face has scratches and his neck is sore... all in all not too bad... he got up and cried around a bit and then walked about and iced his back and decided to go to a doc or hospital or somehting.
The bike... Scratched front fender, scratched wheel, scratched forks, scratched tank, scratched rear right tail, scratched sissy bar, scratched muffler, and cracked dash back side... and right side ignition cover... both of which were already broken from a previous owner type crash, and front brake lever which was of course good before the crash. Now this body already needed paint and the tank already had a bunch of bondo. Muffler was anyway going to get the axe and a repaint was on the schedule this winter. But even otherwise... the scratches are nothing when you consider the severity of the crash.

Sounds like he forgot "friction zone" and had a "wrist-up" throttle position. Maybe he never rode before, or rode a minibike or something.
When someone comes to pick-up the bike, you need to tell them the bike is 5 miles down a dirt road, and they have to ride a beat-up old DR200 to go get it. Maybe a few minutes on the DR200 will bring it all back to them. If not, well, hopefully the dirt hurt less than the street would have. Suggest that they come back and pick it up ater taking MSF. Some people take a suggestion much better when they're laying on the ground in pain.
There's always another buyer. Selling to idiots can be stressful, and if they're real jerks, they can try to sue. The stress may not be worth it.

That's why I can't imagine working for a m/c dealer: many will happily sell a 600-lb bike to a unlicensed newbie, knowing full-well that they'll probably crash on the way home, and either bring it back for repairs, or bring-back the insurance check and buy another bike. You need a pretty thick skin to do that intentionally (By that, I'm
not implying that Srinath knowingly put a novice on the GS... just talking about the warped dealer perspective).
I guess some people's learning curves are steeper than others....

What novice... this dude is like 45, and was acting all level headed, and was willing to wait a few days before he even came to my house to see the bike, was not acting like a newbie what so ever... He also said he had ridden many years ago... what I didn't ask ... and it entirely never crossed my mind I should even give him a verbal lesson... cos he was acting so cool and confident. He also argued with another dude about who should have the bike and reasoned him out of the picture. Anyway... I went down to talk to him and he was mumbling somehting about paying for the damage, and ... I am like its your bike... but I guess he wants to fix it and sell it or somehting. Man when he was on it and hitting all those obstacles I heard some sick thuds... I guess he hit the metalling air filling thing with the handlebar... breaking off the brake lever.

:lol: Hell Yeah it's funny! Big deal, he fell on his ass and thumped off the side of a parked big rig. I can just imagine Srinath seeing this guy fly in one end and all you hear is THUMP WACK BOING THUMP BANG, and dude goes flying out the other end.
When I wheelied out of control and crashed (quite awhile back) I thought later that it was pretty damn funny too. Despite a broken wrist and tendonitis. shaZam! happens folks and then you die.

Next time he won't be so overconfident and might ask for instructions. Too many novices are too "macho" to aks for help. They just figure it's like riding a bike. Air-filling stations will bring out the humility in a man...very quickly.
You all are horrible...I can't stand to see anybody cry...even a grown man. You should make sure they're ok...then laugh. Hope you don't go down on your beloved GranSport...love this forum.

I wasn't laughing at this guy's misfortune, I was laughing at Srinath's storytelling skills. :)
Srinath...Next time you sell a bike, take a video camera.
That just about was reading my mind... Would have made america's funniest or that max X thing on UPN... It was a white newish (1-2 year old) chevy pickup truck ... not a big rig. Anyway, case covers, and lever replaced, the bike made it home. The scratches and stuff are not hurting the looks any... cos it had plenty of paint related blemishes. The guy was fairly level headed... I mean he wanted to "re-learn" on it then paint it, didn't want to slap every cool and brightly colored, accesory on it, was buying a helmet mail order after fitting them on at stores... had gloves too he was telling me about ... asked me about jackets... etc ... Not someone who is going for the coolness at all... BTW he also weighed a good 40-50lbs more than me... which makes him close to a 275... and the bike I thought wasn't going to move him fast and well enough... I guess so much for that. And he was at work yesterday... so he's not badly hurt ... some sore spots and probably on some decent pain medication possibly, but the day after the crash is usually the most painful... and he didn't stay home... so I guess he wasn't too messed up.
BTW another dude came by over the weekend and bought my friends bike... went very un eventfully. He rode this one, my 89 and my friends vulcan and bought it... and he seemed more newbie than this guy... young, and just got a license and didn't have a car... and wanted a sporty bike... but finally decided based on the fact his girl friend might want to ride on the back, and very reluctantly opted for a cruiser... but he rode the bikes just fine. So I guess you cant judge a squid by his looks... :lol:
The dude isn't screwed up too much... so feel free to laugh away... cos pretty soon he will be as well...
