Title: Bad Coils or Starter Cylinoid!!!
Post by: asf135 on September 30, 2004, 09:55:07 PM
How do i check my coils and starter cylinoid... my bike is having problems with electronics.  It will sometimes crank when i hit the start button and sometimes will not.  I have gone through with a volt meter to the start and kill switches on the handle bars both had correct voltage but after that i am lost.

Check the connections to and operation of the starter solenoid (relay).

On the GS you need to pull the clutch lever to be able to crank the engine.

After putting my GS on the floor in my early biking days, I need to pool the clutch lever so that it almost touches the bar grip - or the switch doesn't engage. Before that, just half or so was good enough (IIRC).

So - check your clutch lever switch.

1) Read through the ACK! Bike won't turn over! (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9874) thread.

2) If that doesn't help, try the Narrowing down the problems to a broken bike (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5500) thread.  About halfway down the 1st page is some information about testing the ignition coils.

3) Finally, try the bike won't start!! (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9304) thread.  If you get tired of MY input, TonyW's 1st post on the 2nd page tells you where to find a good troubleshooting procedure in the Clymer manual.
