Hi all, well a few things happened to my bike the other day, I was riding to work and as I came to a stop light, I began to down shift and guess what my neutral light went out...at first I thought the gear stuck or something as I tried to find neutral...then its dawn on me that the light went out...then on the way home I started to notice a strange buzzing/rattling sound, as if my key or something is vibrating against each other...at first it sounded like its from the dash board, but after wiggling and grabbed hold of everything to see if the vibration go away...but nothing...the noise is still there!!..then i noticed that noise only appears when the RPM is between 6000 to 6500...below or above that range and the noise disappeared....so I kept the RPM below 6000 all the way home...parked the bike on center stand....and fired up the engine, rev'ed up to 6000 and tried to find where the "vibrating noise" is...and the more I listened, the more its sounded like its coming from the engine. I still dont know what is causing the "vibrating noise" however, one of my friend suggested that my carb is out of sync or I need to adjust my valve clearances...anyway...I really want to know if anyone have any ideas
If you swap the Neutral indicator bulb to another position (say the Turn Signal indicator socket) and it doesn't light when it should, then you're "done" -- install a new bulb.
If it DOES work, then consult the Haynes wiring diagram (http://www.bbburma.net/Scans/Haynes_WiringDiagram_US_90-96.jpg).
Oil pressure warning light come on when you turn the key to ON? If so, then the Orange wire is OK up to the connection that the two lights share. If not, then see if the horn works (it's connected to the Orange wire a little closer to the battery). I assume that everything will check out OK.
2) Next, follow the Blue/black wire from the
Neutral warning light. Perhaps the
Diode (or its connections) have a problem? Follow the Blue wire down and check out the
Neutral switch.[/list:u]About the "buzz" ... could it be the fuel tank vibrating against the frame? Make sure the rubber "gaskets" are in place.
Did the neutral light fall out of the dash and is rattling inside the insrument cluster?
I've found my passenger pegs makes it sound like my engine is rattling.
i have the same exact buzzing sound!... only happens b/n 6k and 6500.
how odd. please let me know if you find the cause :)
OK, I spend like 2 days tearing the bike to pieces, took the engine apart and did not find anything wrong that would cause the rattling buzzing sound. I put everything back together and fired up the engine, reved to 6K and that buzzing again...well turns out that the front right reflector got a crack from the bolt to the plastic reflector and seems thats what the cause is...because once I removed that reflector all the buzzing and rattling were gone...all I hears now are the humming of the engine...wow all that work for a cracked bracket on the reflector.

Also, sometimes the nuts fall off those handlebar extentions and rattle around inside the handlebars.
hrm. My 1996 GS also has that buz between 6100 and 6500. I figured it was just normal and all GSs do it. Especially since I just got my 8k service and the buzz is still there.
I kinda like it. When I first started riding, it was my warning to upshift. Now it's my warning to downshift, unless I'm at cruising speed.
A caburetor vacuum balance may smooth out those vibrations.
Hi, does anyone know how to balance the carb or sync the carb?...and how much or what tools do I need to do the carb sync/balance.
Here is ONE POST (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=62134#62134) that you might start from. As you follow the links you'll get a little info about valve clearances mixed in with the carb synch info -- hope you don't mind.
Oh yeah - make sure you read Lars' post just below the one I linked to. He describes a vacuum gauge-less method that I would like to try sometime.
I just wanted to let you guys know that I too was receiving a weird vibration around 5-6.5k RPMs. I would try to hold different places on the bike to see if I could prevent it and I finally found it. It was actually the wind shield - the two top screws were just a little loose. After I tightened them up I had no more vibrating.
