ill see if i can get a link but i have one to a great site about what to look for...

but mostly look to see if the bike has been down, scrapes on the cover.. or the heatsinks on the side, exhaust bar ends ect.

take a flashlight look in the gas tank try and see if there is any rust, start it up .

look at the chain make sure theres no rust...

umm tires make sure there is ample tread, feel the brake lever and the clutch. if you got a friend to test ride it that would be awesome, and jsut to help you look at the bike.

im sure the guys here will tell you lots more

good luck!

Do yourself a favor and don't get a 12 year old bike.
Get something newer.  The difference between and 12 year old and 6 year old can't be a lot of money.  It's just not a question of the engine, it's all the rubber parts, seals etc.
Good luck.

My 15,19,29,30, and 32 year old bikes would argue that point.

But that's just me.  I don't mind turning a wrench once in a while.

My 15 year old crapped out and rusted ...when it was a mere 6 -7 year old... my 22 year old, which I have had since it was 18... not a spot. Buy an old POS... the moderate new POS's are partly crap... the very new POS's are total crap...
Cool.
