Title: How hard to replace rear shaock and what does it cost.
Post by: Anonymous on October 02, 2004, 03:59:39 PM
My rear shock has died (bled to death) and I went to the dealer today to see about a new one (it's just too bumpy without a shock).  Anyway they said $242...  I said come again...  They repeated $242 plus labor.  Oh, and a Katana shock was like $800!!!

Anyone know where I can get one cheaper (none on ebay right now) and how hard is it to replace myself?

I figure it should be like $200 or less somewhere on-line (did a search and couldn't find any place selling them) and just take off the tire and remove a few bolts.  Am I right?  Any surprises I should know about?

Thanks!

You should be able to upgrade to a used Katana or GSXR shock for $50 - $100. If you want to put a stocker back in there, you can have mine for $30 shipped. It's got about 20,000 miles on it, but doesn't leak and still works well. For what it's worth though, drop the extra 20 on an upgraded shock. The stockers suck.

Ebay is your friend.  Look for one from a Katana or SV650.  Either should fit fine.  Easy swap, too.  I installed mine from an older Katana 600 and it only took a few minutes.  I think it was 3 bolts.  I got it on Ebay for $18 shipped.

Sky's the limit as far as price is concerned.  If you want one with everything that opens and shuts, made of unobtainium by Swiss vestal virgins under the moonlight, etc, you're gonna pay for it.
I replaced mine with a Hagon from England.  Made to fit, no fiddling.  Took me less than half an hour to fit.  Much easier to adjust than stock, has a threaded collar rather than the seven steps to hell.  Also has damping adjustment.
