I think it is different between the older and newer GS models, which year is yours?

I don't have photos of all the positions, but see THIS POST (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=105387&highlight=#105387) for "drawings".

There is no "closed" position.  The ON and REServe both serve as "closed" positions when the engine is not running because they are vacuum-actuated.  The PRIme position is always "open" and gravity-fed.

and the PRIme selector being for what specifically?

The PRIme position is mostly for refilling the float bowls when the carbs have been worked on or otherwise emptied.

In this situation, the ON and RES positions are no big help because they will only pass fuel through as the engine turns and provides vacuum.

The PRIme position has also served me when my bike runs out of gas in the REServe position, although this probably wasn't one of its design features.  (I have been able to ride a few extra miles ... with frequent stops and leanings to the left, etc.)
