just wondering how many miles is too many when it comes to a bike. I know when looking for a car 100,000+ miles would be insane, what is suitable for a bike when it comes to purchasing a used bike. particularly a 600cc sport bike with 19,000 miles on it

I've heard tell of 600's that have lasted beyond 50,000 miles. I think that those engines are alot tougher than they are given credit for. You probably see so few of them with high mileage because they typically get wrecked before they reach that mark :roll: One of the mags ran one on a half quart of oil with the throttle locked open and the thing just kept on going and going... even after it started shooting fire :o they had to really beat the crap out of it to get it to stop running.
However... 19,000 miles is alot of use (or abuse). You might want to be cautious particularly if you don't have a good idea of how the bike has been ridden/maintained for all of those miles :dunno:

19k miles in how many years? At the rate I ride (just once or twice a week) I'll have that in 2 years on my 04 600rr! :o
How well, if at all, it was maintained goes a lot farther toward it being in good shape than the actual miles.
not selling my baby just yet. just got an offer from a guy at my job and i was curious. he has a blue 2000 R6 with 19000 miles on it. he wants my gs for his wife who is just learning an has just finished a MSF course. i told him i didint know. my bike is still brand new and his has 19000. he also has it all pimped out and what not. stage 3 jet kit, slip on exhuast ect. any opinions??
check when the first major service is (could be at 16k or more). check his service records against the maintenance schedule in the manual.
How does he ride it? stunts, commuting, what?
How has he maintained it ? If he did the work himself he should still have receipts for parts.
Check your local area for the value of a R6 with that kind of mileage. Addons/mods/aftermarket do not inherently add any value to the bike. You dont know if the jetting was done right, etc.
Why is he selling it? is this a straight trade?
What visual condition is it in?
has it been raced or seen many track days?

another thing to consider with the older R6's is that the new ones are tame compared to the first edition. The 99-00 models were known to be beasts. Total nutter bike not fit for the road. if you were to get an R6 you'd be better off with a newer one, given your limited experience.
thanks for all the advice pablo, i really appreciate it. this guy says this in an email. I am the original owner of this Yamaha YZF R 600. The bike has been lowered and has a stage three jet kit. It has carbon fiber air intake, brand new clutch cable, all front left and right turn signals are flush against side fairings, and a Yoshimura pipe. The frame, rear pegs, and rims, have all been chromed. The front forks are from an R 1 for better handling of the bike. $700 worth of work done in the last month with new rear tire, chain, rear brake pads, brake discs, and sprokets. The only thing wrong with the bike is that there are scratches on the left side of the fairings due to gravel in parking lot. All scratched are being repaired

A YZF600R is not the same as an YZF R6. It's considerably cheaper (at least brand new.. not sure about the resale value):
