Title: oil change
Post by: inferno on October 15, 2004, 09:33:50 AM
I'm about to change my oil for the first time.  The guy who had the bike before me used synthetic oil, so I know I should use synthetic.  I was thinking about mobil 1 10W40 synthetic blend.  Do I need to get motorcycle specific oil, or can I just go to autozone and get it?

I hate to think of myself as one of these guys, but here it goes....

Use the "Search" feature!  Dozens of good threads about this will show up.

ok dammit I can't just leave it at that.  Regular car oil is fine as long as it's not "Energy Conserving".  Generally anything rated xW-40 or higher will be fine.  The standard GS oil is 10W-40, but you can use 5W-40, 15W-40, 15W-50, etc.  Lots of people like the Shell Rotella stuff, I've got a mix of 2 qts Mobil 1 15W-50 and 1 qt Mobil 1 5W-40, just 'cause I had it all lying around.

Thats close to what I use (Castrol syn blend), and yep you can get it anywhere.  Stick to 10-W40 :thumb:
