Title: Two close calls in two days...
Post by: Daniely on October 21, 2004, 01:16:04 PM
Well after having my bike for the better part of 5 days im loving it. Last night Tony and I (mk1) drove up to a local mini-hill with some twisties and a great view. Great ride. On the way back after we went our separate ways i stopped at a turn with two lanes. Light goes green and we both go to make the turn which is normal, half way through the arc of the turn the old lady next to me decides she wants to be in my lane. I have to gas it and swerve HARD to miss her, i could have kicked in her hood. She ended up from my right (outside of the turn) to my left (freeway onramp) when all was said and done. Think it scared the two old ladies more than me, but still close.

The next one happened about 20 min ago, it was foggy this morning so i drove my truck to work. At lunch it was sunny so i drove home to get the bike. On my way back to work a little riced out honda civic pulls out in front of me when im in the middle of the intersection. I hit my brakes maybe a tad to hard and rear tire locked up and i slid maybe 1 foot behind em. I put it in neutral stood up on the bike and started yellin at em and honkin and they just took off. Such an exciting day so far, i cant wait to see what the ride home brings....sheesh some people.

I don't waste my energy yelling.  If I have a hand free, I'll flip an idjit off, or flash my brights, but man, I have a close call almost every day.

Yesterday - woman in minivan.  I'm on the right of two lanes, pickup is to my left.  Light turns green, I start to move.  The woman in the minivan, on the intersection to my right, stopped at the red - and then, as I was moving, turned right across two lanes, cutting right in front of me and ending up on my left.

This being a particularly asinine move, I did both - flashed my brights, then zipped around and gave the finger.

However, I have noticed that both on my bike and in the car, I'm more observant than I was before I started riding.  I think riding makes me a better driver - it's certainly making me more courteous to bikers - and that's all good.

I agree, I either pause and give the drive a nasty look (through my mirror shield  ) or I flash my high beams.  I don't hardly bother with my horn because it's so freakin pathetic a driver won't hear it with their windows up

The Silverstar low beam is plenty bright for my tastes.  People flash me at night like I have my highbeam on when its on the low.  I must really blind them when I let them know my high beam isn't on

I don't usually ride with my high beams on but it seems everyone is different on that opinion although I will put on my highs when I'm splitting.

I don't flip people off, except when I'm in the car. The people aren't going to get it when you flip them off, they're too clueless in the first place. If anything you maybe making motorcyclists appear to be anti-social and overly-aggressive, thus the disregard we get. Of course, I wasn't there, and yes it's a generalization, but it's a generalization I'd like to shed. I would like to respected, even if I'm not respectable.

Andy - You have a SilverStar!? When did you get that!?

Sorry, but when I see someone do something asinine, I don't think expressing that in a nondestructive fashion is "overly aggressive."  Regardless of what the expresser is riding/driving.

Kicking mirrors off - that's overly aggressive.  A nice clean flipoff just says "You did something really stupid and should be ashamed."

I've had it since last fall I think.  I thought I'd told you about it.  I'm pretty sure I showed you, at some point, the difference in the light emitted.  Its been an awesome bulb.  My roommate has them on his Civic but they both burned out recently and he bought them a couple months after I bought mine.  I'm not sure what's going on there :dunno:

In fact, I liked the Silerstars so much I installed them on my Nissan but my Nissan has gone the way of the DoDo and I have my Toyota pickup now.  It has Xtra visions so I haven't felt a need to upgrade it yet.

I bought the H4 (what Clymer recommends) for my bike.  Is the 9003 the same bulb? :?

They are interchangable but H4 is motorcycle-specific, while 9003 is for cars. If I remember correctly the wattage is slightly different, H4 has higher low-beam wattage and lower high-beam. I have H4 and it rocks :thumb:

You're right, as far as overly-aggressive. I would probably prefer a 'thumbs down' or even this:

I either let tailgaters go by or, if there's no way to pull over safely, I slow way down so they get frustrated and go around me.

Please don't judge all BMW drivers by the all-to-common jackasses in the whatever is the current Newest Model, though!  ;)

I did let him go by, and I even waved him by.

I don't tend to generalize. So, of course, I don't judge all BMW drivers as jackasses. We have to keep a wary eye out for everybody! Our job, as motorcyclists, is to compensate for other's inattentativeness.

Thats a pretty tall request in this area   :nana:

I had a memorable moment the other night when some jackass in an M5 nearly clipped me zooming by on a merge and then slammed on his brakes because he had to turn into a parking lot.  I guess he couldn't stay behind me where he had been and wait to turn into the lot

I try not to generalize but some BMW drivers really make easy targets for criticism.  same with some Volvo drivers
