Title: Oil change
Post by: trustno1 on October 22, 2004, 06:39:56 AM
Hello there!!

Last time (and the only) I changed the oil in the spring, since then I made approx 6000Km, suppouse that it's time to change it...actually I don't know how often I need to do that job.
In the manual they say that i should use 10W40 oil but i used MOTUL 15W50 V300 FULL SYNTH!! .... I do that because most of my rideing is in the town at 40 degree C...so the engine is very hot :(
So, that's my question: how often I need to change synth oil?

10x

see what i do is dip a long magnet into my oil tank  when it comes back out i remove all the metal shavings.  You have to do this a few times make sure you get all of them.   After removing all the metal i  top off the oil and i  only change it like once every 10,000 miles.  Ha jk like it would be ok if i had metal shavings in my oil. bet i got some people to read this one

How many miles are on your bike, how much oil does it use and for how long have you been doing that?

10000 miles is 2,5 times as long as the original service interval. When I change the oil after 6000 km (4000 mi) and put in the new stuff I can hear and feel the difference. With new oil the engine is more silent and it vibrates a bit less.  Also, I use a magnet that I dip in the dirty oil after it has come out of the engine and I barely have metal shavings. Only some very small particles, not even worth mentioning. There's a possibility that the engine wears faster with the old oil.

I don't believe in the 2000 mi. oil changes like some people do. I do believe that it's the best for your bike to change it at the recommended service interval. Remember that it's not a car, cars can take much more abuse than a bike.

For the topic starter: just change it every 6000 km. Also change the oil filter. You can use the 15W50 also, but if it gets really cold in the winter, the viscosity may be too high. 10W40 is usable in winter and summer. I've been in traffic jams with hot weather. No problem.
