Thank you to everyone for this forum. I have learned a lot.
I'm buying my first bike, and I'm thinking of the 2004 GS500F. I'm a brand new rider so I will probably drop it a couple of times. Should it be O.K to remove all the fairings untill I get confident riding the bike, or are the fairings tied in with any of the controls. The only experience I have is the MSF course.
remove the fairings and you'l have to rig up a headlight and some mirrors. I cant think of anything else that is connected with them.
But instead of spending money on that stuff maybe you should invest in a set of frame sliders and touch up paint (or more practice)...
for sliders and other cool things for the gs check here:

or he could just take the sides off, since they come apart from the top and I could be like an SV.
Just a thought!!

you can take the sides off. the front fairing with the mirrors can be there.. atleast if you drop it you wont have that much plastic damage.. by the wya the stock bars have the mirror mounts closed, just take off the rubber peice and you can put in new mirrors if you want to.
taking it off requires a few bolts .. that's it.
