Title: valves
Post by: weaselnoze on October 28, 2004, 05:25:39 PM
~15K miles on the bike.  after riding for awhile i notice tapping at idle.  i've read that if the suggested valve adj wasnt done then this could occur.  all i need to do is get a valve adj, right?  also at 8.5K+rpm i hear a pinging noise. could this also be corrected by valve adjustment?

Yep, that oughta do it.  But if you're not a complete stranger to wrenches you can at least check the clearances yourself ... to see if your suspicions are well-founded.  Besides the standard tools to remove the tank about all you need is a 6mm Allen wrench (to remove the valve cover) and a set of feeler gauges (to push into the gaps between the cam lobes and the shims).

And if we can convince you to get THAT deep into it, maybe we can talk you through pulling the too-tight shims, measuring them, and dropping replacements in.  That's all there is to it!

Hmmm.  You can actually hear an out-of-place engine noise at 8500+ RPM?  A valve adjustment might take care of it, but I couldn't say for sure.  :dunno:

thanks kerry.  when i get some time i'll ask more questions about the valve adjustment. if its easy enough to explain i prob can do it.   and about the high rpm noise.. idk if thats abnormal or not. it just doesnt sound 'clean'.  when i did my oil change i thought it went away but it is still there unfourtunately.  its kinda raspy.  haha its hard to explain

when you get into it, let me know how the valve adjustment goes if you try it yourself....i am considering this also (although im not very good at workign on engines, so i might need a lot of guidance :) )
