Title: Boot suggestions ?
Post by: jag69 on October 30, 2004, 01:14:15 PM
I have a pair of Alpinestar Roam boots.  The boots are very comfortable, but the three velcro straps and beginning to give up.  I feel that the boot isn't very safe anymore.  Any suggestions of a pair of boots with other types of closures (zippers, straps, or buckles).

Thanks in advance.

Sidi Vertabrae if you are looking for maximum protection.  They make a waterproof model and a vented model as well as the regular one.

Looking for a deal?  New enough has a few boots on closeout.  The Teknic boots look like a good deal.

I bet you could have a cobbler sew in new velcro, if that's the only thing that's wrong with them.

Redwing makes a pretty good pair of motorcycle boots.  They probably don't provide quite as much protection as the sidi boots but they're made of full grain leather, have a steel shank and really nice Vibram soles (won't slip on oil and an assortment of chemicals).  They're also casual/normal enough to wear around as standard footwear.  You can also waterproof the leather pretty easily if you wanted.

I'll second the Sidi Vertabrae.

You can get waterproof work boots at Wall Mart for 40-50 bucks, but they have laces.  Gotta be careful that the laces don't get hooked on to the footpeg, shifter or brake.  Motorcycle specific boots never have laces, and you end up paying a whole lot more.  Also, MC boots are pretty much for riding and not walking.

The Sidi boots are suprisingly good for walking around in.  Also, motorcycle specific boots not only protect your feet, which have almost half the bones in the human body, but they allow you to feel the shift lever, brake lever and pegs.  You can't hang off if you can't feel the pegs.

I found a place called Z Custom Leathers in Huntington Beach, CA:

http://www.zcustom.com/

I plan to get some custom motorcycle boots made.  They also split sizes for those of us with different sized feet.  I'll post back with a review once I get them.

If anyone has experience with them, please share.

...newenough.com has Oxtar Matrix boots and others on sale.  The Matrix is CE approved and has a Gore-Tex liner.  Size 45 fits my 11.5 foot but it is also a wide boot.  Good construction.  Mid-calf.

I third the Sidi Vertabra!!!

I have a pair for summer and track riding, and plan to replace my waterproof Tecknics with the waterproof Sidis.
Maximum protection, and they look damn cool!!!
Youll be tucking your pants in everywere you go, just to show them off.
If there good enough for the racers, there good enough for me.

I really think a velcro flap or a zipper with a velcro flap over the caboodle is the safest closure.  In an accident, there's nothing to get caught or fly off and hit you in a painful manner.

I have a set of A* Web Gore-Tex for wet weather and A* SMX for dry.  They both have an over-ankle zipper with a velcro flap over the top, and a velcro flap over the calf.  If the velcro ever starts to wear out, I'll just have a cobbler replace it.

I am happy with my Daytona M Stars.

My original bike boots were combat boots (of the jungle kind).  They were good but I worried about the nylon sides and they were a little cold.  I went out and got a pair of engineer boots.  They addressed these two issues and had the additional bonus of having a higher heal.  This let me totally flat foot the GS (only 5'7").

But it started to rain so I got the Daytonas.  They were $$ but are Gore-Tex.  They have an insole that makes my 5'9" - pretty crazy.  And each boot has 4 zippers and velco strips so you can wear your pants inside or outside.  They're comfy like tennis shoes.

I give 2-thumbs up.
